The Iberia Parish Council is considering creating a third tax increment finance district in the parish, this time in the Delcambre area.
The council already has created two TIFs, a tool used to spur economic development in a defined area by generating revenue, sometimes through additional taxes, to improve infrastructure.

Economic Development District 1 stretches from the St. Mary Parish line to the St. Martin Parish line along U.S. 90 — excluding areas within New Iberia city limits — in which the council voted to levy an additional 1 percent sales tax within its boundaries. The second TIF created by the council includes a 10-acre tract at the intersection of Louisiana 14, or Center Street and Weeks Island Road.
The third TIF talk is “very preliminary” said District 13 Councilman Larry Richard.
“We’re just looking at any kind of way we can stimulate economic development in the Delcambre area,” Richard said.
The third TIF is scheduled to be introduced as a standing committee item for discussion and consideration Wednesday night.
The council also is scheduled to consider for the final time, a $10,000 grant to the Spanish Lake Commission for repairs to the control structure at the lake.
Jody David, biologist with the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, addressed the council last week regarding the department’s management plan for the lake.

Some council members were concerned part of the $10,000 would go toward drawing down the lake, which many of them do not support. David said the decision to draw down the lake in the future would be in the hands of Wildlife and Fisheries. The $10,000 the commission is requesting is only intended for control structure repairs. David also told the council it is likely the $10,000, if granted by to the council, could be reimbursed through a federal boater access program.
Also, state Rep. Fred Mills, R-Parks, also is scheduled to attend Wednesday’s meeting to address the council regarding his candidacy for the state Senate seat representing District 22.
The meeting, which is open to the public, begins at 6 p.m. and is held on the fourth floor of the Iberia Parish Courthouse.
