The Panthers’ 4×400 relay team also placed third, and six other DHS boys placed in the top six in events at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track Stadium. Clarence Farrier, Drew Campbell, Jesse Mayfield and Umphries ran the 4×400 for DHS.
“Once I saw the times and distances (for other entrants to the state meet), I felt we had a legitimate chance to compete,” said DHS coach Darcy Delcambre.
The Lady Panthers tied for 10th with Northwood-Lena, each scoring 9 points, with Alexa Grossie’s third-place finish in the 800 the top finish for DHS. Ouachita Christian won the team title with 81 points.
Cody Gonsoulin of Loreauville finished fourth in the boys’ Class 2A shot put at 51 feet, 6 inches for his team’s only points of the state meet.
Umphries ran the 100-meter hurdles in 15.42 seconds and the 300-meter hurdles in 40 flat for a pair of third-place finishes. Campbell was fifth in the 300 hurdles in 41.68.
Also scoring for Delcambre on the track were Mayfield, fourth in the 800 (2:05.21), Coy Choate, fifth in the 3,200 (10:43.78), and the 4×200 meter relay team, sixth in 1:33.44. Campbell, Farrier, Umphries and Mayfield ran the 4×200.

Ryne Esponge was fifth in the pole vault at 12-6 and Dillon Suire was fifth in the triple jump at 44-5 1/2 for the Panthers’ points in the field.
Darcy Delcambre said many of his athletes had personal bests at the state meet. The 4×400 team went to state with a top time of 3:35 and came out third after shaving off seven seconds from that time to finish in 3:28.47. Mayfield had his best 800 time. Choate cut nearly 13 seconds off his best time in the 300 hurdles, while Umphries ran around the same time he’s been running all year. Suire’s triple jump topped his previous best by two feet.
“Like I tell the kids, when you come to the state meet and set a personal record, that’s about all you can ask of them to do,” said Delcambre.
Grossie finished the girls’ 800 in 2:23.78. The Lady Panthers’ other points came in the field, with Lauren Miguez fifth in the discus at 89-10 and Jenny Bouillion sixth in the shot put at 29-11 1/2.
