Young Westgate team looks to gain experience this summer

If there is one thing that Westgate Wildcats coach Jerome Jacob would like to accomplish this summer as his summer league team gets ready for Junior American Legion play, it would be one simple thing.

“Win more games,” said Jacobs.

After last summer, when the team won only four of 22 games, more wins would definitely be on the top of any coach’s list of goals.

But more than just winning games, Jacob would like to make sure that his players get some playing time and show improvement as he takes the WHS junior varsity — and some members of the varsity, for a total of 17 players — into another summer of baseball.

“We need to get them some varsity experience for next year,” said Jacob. “We also want to give them some exposure in the state to give some guys a chance to move up to the next level.”

Probably the thing that Jacob wants to work on the most this summer is pitching. Westgate’s varsity team didn’t have a lot of it during the spring season so now Jacobs plans to work on it during the Junior American Legion season in order to give the pitching rotation some much needed depth for next year.

He would also like to a more aggressive attitude at the plate.

“Pitching is our biggest concern,” said Jacob. “We need to get it together. Then we can work on hitting the ball more aggressively and cut down on errors in the field.”

The Westgate coach said he is going to play anywhere from 20 to 30 games this summer, which starts Tuesday night when the Wildcats play host to Cajun Sting starting at 7 p.m.

Westgate will play in a league this summer with teams from Abbeville, New Iberia Senior High and Delcambre, according to Jacobs.

“We’re so young,” the Westgate coach added.

“We need to get the team some experience this summer. Hopefully we can do that so that we are ready when spring baseball comes back around.”
