Westgate scored a touchdown in each half and held New Iberia off the scoreboard for a 14-0 win to cap the three-game Iberia Parish Sugar Cane Jamboree Friday night at Lloyd G. Porter Memorial Stadium.
Catholic High rallied from an early deficit to beat Delcambre 22-7 in the opening game and Loreauville scored five first-half touchdowns after Jeanerette returned the opening kickoff for a TD in the second game, helping LHS to a 41-7 win.
The three games each featured future district matchups. Catholic High, Delcambre, Jeanerette and Loreauville are four of the five teams in the new District 6-2A — West St. Mary will be the fifth — and Westgate and New Iberia are moving together from District 4-5A to District 6-5A, which features five teams from Terrebonne and Lafourche parishes.
Players of the game were chosen for each team by members of the press box staff. Delcambre running back Jace Dore and Catholic High quarterback Joe Lissard were players of the game for the first game. Jeanerette kick returner Randall Bouie and Loreauville quarterback Raymond Bonnette were players of the game for the second game. Westgate linebacker Duval Jackson and New Iberia wide receiver Kemory Deal were players of the game for the third game.
The Daily Iberian and Community First Bank were sponsors for the Player of the Game honors.
The jamboree was sponsored by Coca Cola and The Daily Iberian.
Catholic High 22, Delcambre 7
Both teams scored on their opening drives, Delcambre marching 74 yards in only four plays to take a 7-0 lead and CHS answering with a six-play, 55-yard drive to tie the score. Catholic High added a pair of second-half touchdowns to win.
Three of Delcambre’s four plays on its opening drive resulted in either first downs or a touchdown. Dore broke loose on a 45-yard run, going virtually untouched for the touchdown, to end the drive. Fullback Ashton Eastin had two carries for 15 yards in the drive, and Dore carried twice for 59 yards.
Dylan LeBlanc tacked on the point-after kick.
Catholic High mixed the pass and run on its initial scoring drive, with three plays on the ground and three in the air. Lissard completed two of three passes in the drive for 42 yards, including a 22-yard TD pass to Gabriel Fusilier, who broke two tackles in side the 5-yard line to get to the end zone.
Neither team scored again in the half, but Catholic High scored on both of its second-half possessions. Lissard and Fusilier again hooked up for a touchdown pass of nine yards on the opening drive of the half, and the Panthers converted a run from the swinging gate formation for a 15-7 lead.
D’Shawn Etienne capped the scoring with a nine-yard TD carry, with Grant Quinlan tacking on the point-after. Etienne finished the night with 66 yards on 11 carries. Lissard completed nine of 15 passes, including his final five attempts, for 166 yards. Blake Byrom had four catches for 91 yards, Fusilier had three for 44 and Rhett Gonsoulin caught two passes for 30 yards.
Dore led Delcambre with 67 yards on seven totes and Eastin had 47 yards on 10 runs. The Panthers drove to Catholic High’s 1-yard line on their first possession of the second half, with quarterback Robert Primeaux throwing to Clarence Farrier for 24 yards and the first down, but DHS lost yardage on its next three plays and threw incomplete on fourth down to end the series.
CHS travels to Teurlings Catholic on Friday to open the season. Delcambre plays host to Erath.
Loreauville 41,
Jeanerette 7
Bouie stunned Loreauville by returning the opening kickoff 91 yards for a touchdown, taking the ball on the left half of the field, then cutting right and heading to paydirt. Juandre Gilliam threw to Abdul Tate for the 2-point conversion and an 8-0 lead only seconds into the game.
But Loreauville scored on all five of its first-half touchdowns, the longest drive taking four plays. A long kick return, a pair of fumbles, an interception and a turnover on downs led to short fields for LHS, which had nearly as many TDs (five) as first downs (six) in the half.
Jermaine Antoine scored the first Loreauville touchdown on an eight-yard run and Zach Galatas kicked the point-after to pull LHS to within 8-7. Rhashid Bonnette set up the short drive with a 50-yard return of the kickoff following Jeanerette’s touchdown.
Jeanerette fumbled at the 16 on its ensuing possession and three plays later, Nick Julien went in from five yards out. Galatas kicked the PAT for a 14-8 lead.
JSH then turned the ball over on downs at its 38, and on the first snap afterward, Raymond Bonnette hit Rhashid Bonnette with a 38-yard touchdown pass. The PAT made it 21-8.
Alex Knatt set up the next Loreauville touchdown with an interception and return. Julien made it a one-play offensive drive with a 19-yard touchdown run and the PAT made it 28-8.
Jeanerette then fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Charles Francois recovered at the 16 for LHS. Three plays later, Raymond Bonnette scored on a three-yard run and the point-after made it 35-8 at halftime.
Loreauville went on a relatively long five-play scoring drive to start the second half, with Bonnette again scoring on a quarterback keeper from 35 yards out. A botched snap led to an incomplete pass on the PAT try.
Antoine led LHS with 66 yards on three runs. Raymond Bonnette added 56 yards on six carries and Julien had 45 yards on four runs.
Jeanerette’s big play outside the kick return was a 68-yard pass from Tate to Gilliam on a fake punt, but the drive ended with Knatt’s interception.
Loreauville opens the season at home Thursday against Central Catholic. Jeanerette plays host to Kaplan on Friday.
Westgate 14,
New Iberia 0
Westgate showed a strong defense and improved offense, while New Iberia ran with some success but helped Westgate’s offense with a couple of penalties and a blown pass coverage.
Neither team put together a scoring drive through most of the first half, until Westgate went 80 yards in five plays, aided by two major penalties, to take the lead with 1:40 to go.
Westgate took over at its 20 and lost yards on its first two snaps, but a 15-yard facemask penalty on the second play gave the Tigers a first down. WHS quarterback D’Nerius Antoine then broke loose for a 33-yard run, spinning out of a tackle after apparently being stopped on a run to the left, then going around right end. A late hit added 15 yards to the play, and Jamal Sam went in untouched from 22 yards away on the next snap for a TD. Aaron Bird kicked the point-after for a 7-0 lead.
A short punt midway through the second half gave Westgate the ball at New Iberia’s 21, and Antoine ran to the 4 on the first snap from there. But a pair of penalties pushed WHS back to a third-and-goal situation from the NISH 22. Antoine faked a handoff, and found Damian Francis open behind the defense from there for the touchdown. Bird’s PAT made it 14-0.
“That was a good call by Westgate,” said NISH coach Rick Hutson, adding that the Yellow Jackets need to do a better job of reading their keys while playing defense.
Antoine completed four of eight passes for 42 yards and a TD and rushed for 51 yards on five carries. Sam gained 47 yards on 11 rushes.
“I thought D’Nerius was pretty solid for us at quarterback, running our offense and throwing the ball,” said WHS coach Brian Fine. “I was pretty pleased with that.”
Velot Khammany led NISH with 30 yards on five carries and Javonte Johnson completed eight of 19 passes for 50 yards.
“We had a little success running the ball, which I wasn’t sure if we were going to be able to do,” said Hutson. “But I saw what they were doing. They were trying to contain the quarterback, and when you do that you’re going to be a little softer up the middle.”
Fine said overall he was pleased with the play of his secondary. The Tigers had some defensive breakdowns on blitz calls, and did some things well on offense, he said. But he wanted to look at the game film before he could make a full determination on the team’s progress.
“To me, the jamboree’s a second scrimmage,” he said. “You look at the film and hope you were a little better than you were in the scrimmage.”
Westgate opens the season Friday at Breaux Bridge. NISH travels to St. Martinville to open the season.
