Local teams lose votes in polls

Three area ranked teams dropped votes in the latest statewide Louisiana Sports Writers Association high school football polls after losing on opening weekend, but all continue receiving votes and one, Loreauville, stayed in the Top 10 after losing to another ranked team.

Westgate fell from the Class 5A Top 10 after a 35-10 loss to Breaux Bridge, ranked fifth at the time in Class 4A and currently ranked second. Westgate was eighth in the 5A poll with 73 points, but slipped to 8 points in the second poll.

New Iberia, which beat St. Martinville 24-6, actually lost votes in the 5A poll but maintained its position, two spots out of the Top 10 with 16 points.

Loreauville dropped from fourth to sixth in the Class 2A poll after a 15-12 loss to Central Catholic, ranked ninth in Class A last week and again this week. Loreauville has 55 points in the latest voting.

Catholic High fell from eighth in Class 2A to one spot out of 10th with 31 points this week following a 14-13 loss at Class 4A Teurlings Catholic.

The top teams in four of the five classifications changed this week. Acadiana, ranked second last week, climbed to No. 1 after its 36-13 win over Northside, then ranked seventh in Class 4A. West Monroe fell from the top spot with a 30-23 loss to Byrd. Acadiana has all 11 first-place votes and 132 points.

In 4A, St. Thomas More leaped from No. 3 to No. 1 with a 44-0 win over Sulphur, netting 11 first-place votes and 132 points this week. Edna Karr, No. 1 in the preseason poll, fell to fourth with a 38-7 loss to St. Paul’s.

In Class 3A, St. Charles Catholic moved up a spot to first with a 42-0 win over Tate, Fla. Parkview Baptist fell to fourth with a 19-16 loss to Mandeville. Patterson, a District 9-3A rival of Franklin and Erath, climbed from third to second after its game against Crowley was canceled because of Tropical Storm Lee. St. Charles has 8 first-place votes and 129 points. Patterson has one first-place vote and 106 points.

John Curtis moved up a spot from second to first in Class 2A with a 34-0 win over Franklinton. The Patriots have 10 of 11 first-place votes and 130 points. Evangel, ranked No. 1 in the first poll, fell to third but has the other first-place vote and 112 points after a 21-0 loss to Union, Okla.

White Castle remains No. 1 in Class A following its 25-0 win over Glen Oaks, gaining an additional two first-place votes to net 126 points this week.
