There’s no place like Dome. Going Dome. Dome is where the heart is.
All clichés to be sure, but it best sums up where Westgate High will spend Friday night as week two of the prep football season gets under way.
In the Allstate Sugar Bowl Prep Classic in the Louisiana Superdome, both Westgate High and former district rival Acadiana High will play games against New Orleans-area schools.
At 6 p.m., the Tigers, having lost to Breaux Bridge 35-10 last week to open the season, take on long-time power John Curtis Christian of River Ridge (1-0). The nightcap will see Acadiana take on St. Paul’s of Covington.
Lafayette High at New Iberia
The Jackets (1-0) opened the season last week with a 24-6 win over St. Martinville while Lafayette High (0-1) dropped a 41-31 decision to Woodlawn High School of Baton Rouge.
It’s the home opener for NISH, which will spend the next month at Lloyd G. Porter Stadium. The Yellow Jackets will play host to Acadiana (Sept. 15) and Thibodaux (Sept. 23) and be the visiting team in the annual intra-city battle with Westgate (Sept. 30) before going on the road again against H.L. Bourgeois (Oct. 7).
Catholic High at Erath
The Panthers (0-1) take on not only a former district rival but also a longtime rival as CHS hits the road to play Erath (1-0).
Catholic High fell 14-13 to Teurlings in its season opener last week while Erath beat Delcambre 31-14 in the first game between the two schools since 2002.
St. Martinville at Franklin
Two teams looking for their first win of the year meet Friday as the Tigers (0-1) travel to Franklin (0-1) in a battle of two teams that were members of the same district in the 1990s.
SMSH fell to New Iberia Senior High 24-6 last week while FSH was shut out 34-0 by former district rival West St. Mary in their annual Fire on the Bayou game.
Jeanerette at St. Mary’s
The Tigers (0-1) unveiled a new wishbone-based offense last week in a 36-14 loss to Kaplan and will try to use the ball control offense to slow down St. Mary’s (1-0), which scored 56 points in its opener against Lakeview last week.
Lake Arthur at Delcambre
The Panthers (0-1), who fell 31-14 to Erath last week in their season opener, play the second of two straight games at home before hitting road for two consecutive weeks.
Lake Arthur (1-0) blew past Hamilton Christian 37-12 last week and is playing the first of three straight road games before returning home later this month.
Loreauville at St. Thomas Aquinas
LHS (0-1) which lost to Central Catholic in a battle of Top 10 teams last week, travels Friday to Hammond to face St. Thomas Aquinas (1-0), which beat Hammond High 20-12 last week in its season opener.
West St. Mary at Northwest
Tre’vell Dixon ran for 146 yards and Glenn Marsh scored two touchdowns as the Wolfpack (1-0) shut down Franklin last week.
The Raiders (1-0) shut out St. Landry Parish rival North Central 36-0 last week in their season opener.
Hanson at Catholic High of Pointe Coupee
The Tigers (1-0), who beat Ascension Catholic 12-7 last week, travel to New Roads to face the Green Hornets (0-1), who lost to Hanson’s district rival Ascension Episcopal 15-10 last week in their season opener.
