Races close or by wide margin

There were several close races and several landslide victories in the St. Mary Parish Council races, according to complete, but unofficial results.

Lionel “Butch” Metz unseated an incumbent and overcame a third candidate in Council District 1 by garnering 995, or 52.9 percent of the vote. Incumbent Parish Councilman Craig A. Mathews received 636 votes for 33.83 percent and challenger Herbert “H.B.” Bell, came in third with 249 votes for 13.24 percent of the vote. All candidates in this district are Democrats.

In District 3, David Hanagriff won by a large majority by receiving 1,564, or 70.64 percent of the votes to challenger Peter Soprano, who garnered 650 votes for 29.36 percent of the vote. Both are Democrats.

Logan J. Fromenthal Jr. was the victor in Council District 6 with 1,244, or 61 percent, of the vote. Challenger Renesse A. Landry received 788 votes for 29.36 percent. Both are Republicans.

Tim Tregle won District 7 with 61.55 percent, or 1,103 votes. His challenger, Rogers Liner garnered only 689 votes for 38.45 percent of the vote. Both are Democrats.

Sterling Fryou barely won District 8 with 506, or 50.91 percent of the vote, while challenger Norris J. Crappell recorded 488 votes for 29.09 percent. It also was a close race in at large Council District 9 with Albert Foulcard garnering 7,207, or 51.45 percent of the vote while his challenger Rodney P. Olander received 6,802 votes, or 48.55 percent.

In at large Council District 10, Democrat Steve Bierhorst won with 63.9 percent, or 8,379 votes, to challenger Darian “Coach” Breaux, no party, received 4,740 votes for only 36.13 percent.

And in at large Council District 11, Kevin Voisin, a Democrat, emerged the victor with 66.5 percent, or 8,802 votes, to challenger Greg A. Green, no party, who received 4,434 votes for 33.5 percent.

A little more than 45 percent of St. Mary’s voters turned out to vote.
