Second half goals from Alan Thomas and Colby Delahoussaye broke a scoreless tie as New Iberia Senior High beat cross-town and district rival Westgate 2-0 Tuesday night at Jacket Pitch.
Jordan Grey had another shutout for the 10th-ranked Yellow Jackets, who improved to 8-1-2 overall and 2-0 in district. NISH plays host to E.D. White Saturday.
“This was a throwback game to the great matches we have had in the past,” said NISH coach Kevin Hardy. “Both teams played their hearts out. Most impressively, it was good, clean competition.”
After a scoreless first half in which Westgate kept NISH on its heels but couldn’t get the ball into the net, Thomas scored the Jackets’ first goal at the 57-minute mark as he deflected in a cross from Brandon Labiche. Just over 10 minutes later, Labiche got a second assist as he passed the ball to Delahoussaye, who blasted a shot past the Westgate goalie.
On a cool, windy night on a field that was very softened by rain, it was the only two goals of the contest.
“The last time we played it was 6-1 NISH,” said Westgate coach Richard Pellerin. “We’re improving. We’re still young and we still have an opportunity to be co-district champs.
“That’s our goal and that’s what we intend on accomplishing.”
Hardy added that right now, his Jackets are playing well. After winning the Sulphur Tournament over the weekend, the team is playing with a lot of confidence.
“We have to avoid injuries,” said Hardy. “We do not have a lot of depth but our conditioning allows us to go long minutes at a high work rate.”
Westgate 3, New Iberia 1
The Westgate Lady Tigers got two first half goals from Morgan Builliard and Cypress Boudreaux and a second half goal from Kelly Clancey to beat New Iberia Senior High Tuesday in Division I, District 7 play.
“I think that it was a good game,” said Westgate coach Fafadji Acouetey. “We really, really wanted this game so we prepared for it.
“I think that we were aggressive today and that made the difference.”
NISH got its only goal in the second half from Bailey Beaugh off an assist from a Sam Reed throw-in.
“The girls didn’t play to their capacity in my opinion,” said NISH coach Rachael Phillips. “I don’t know if I didn’t get them prepared enough for this game or what. But we need to come back out tomorrow and the rest of the week and work hard because we have two more good opponents this week.”
Phillips said the Lady Jackets have to keep their heads up and move past the loss.
Builliard’s goal came in the 25th minute, Alex Corne sent a ball in between two defenders to Boudreaux for the second goal and Clancey scored her goal at the 55 minute mark when she redirected a corner kick.
Acouetey credited Westgate’s defense for keeping NISH away from the goal all night.
“I really want to thank the defenders for playing hard in the contest,” said the WHS coach.
NISH battles Catholic High Thursday and Acadiana High Friday. Westgate plays host to Thibodaux Friday.
