FRANKLIN — It was no big secret that Franklin was going to play hustle defense and shoot from outside against Delcambre Wednesday night at the Hanson Holiday Classic. After all, it was something the Hornets basketball team has been doing all year.
But the level of pressure FSH was able to apply to the Panthers was more than a little surprising.
“We made way too many turnovers and let their quickness bother us,” said DHS coach Benny Dronet. “We didn’t handle the ball well and I think we had like 35 turnovers.
“You’re not going to beat many teams with than number of turnovers. You just won’t.”
Using Delcambre’s turnovers to their advantage, Franklin jumped out to a 10-1 first quarter lead. The Panthers briefly rallied to cut the lead to 16-10 at the end of the opening quarter, but Franklin was able to keep up the pressure and come away with a 61-38 win.
“We played better tonight than we have been playing,” said FSH coach Todd Viator. “We just haven’t been able to finish. We’ve lost a lot of close game because we’re inexperienced.
“We only have two guys that have really played from that last couple of years.”
Avery Bell led Franklin with 25 points and Jrevon Anderson added 11 points for the Hornets, who will play West St. Mary Friday at 8 p.m. in the tournament.
“Hopefully we’ll get some confidence from this tournament,” added Viator. “We’ve been shooting a lot better than we’ve been shooting and we need to cut down on the turnovers. We’re not good enough to throw the ball way and give our opponents extra chances.”
Delcambre plays Centerville today at 5 p.m. in the consolation bracket.
Jace Dore scored 7 for Delcambre and Winston Linden added 5 points.
“We forced some passes and forced some shots tonight and we need to stop doing that,” said Dronet. “They out-quicked us a lot of times. We’re having trouble spreading out and seeing the court and that’s something we have to work on.”
