College decisions

Westgate forward Alex Corne faces a dilemma as her high school career winds down.

She can either choose to become a regular college student or she can go play college soccer.

Either way, she’ll be happy with her decision.

“I have an offer from Louisiana College to go play soccer,” said Corne, who has scored 27 goals this year for the Lady Tigers. “But I really haven’t decided what I want to do. I can either go to LSU or to UL for nursing or go play college soccer.”

Making the decision hasn’t been on the forefront of her mind so far, as she has been helping lead Westgate girls soccer to the brink of the Division I, District 7 girls soccer championship and a berth into the postseason.

But even she admits that the time to make her final decision is getting closer and closer.

“I’ve always wanted to play college soccer but now that my decision is coming down to the wire, I just want to work out my options and make sure that it’s what I want to do,” said Corne.

It’s not as if she would struggle on a college soccer pitch either, according to Westgate coach Fafadji Acouetey.

“On the field, I need her to play forward for us because of her goal scoring ability,” said Acouetey. “But I can easily imagine her playing the midfield in college and becoming one of those attacking mids that can start or finish a goal-scoring opportunity.”

The Westgate coach has been watching his goal scoring threat develop over the past two seasons into a very dangerous offensive soccer player.

“Alex’s game has improved tremendously,” said Acouetey. “She came here as a sophomore and she has improved. Her skills are incredible. She has speed, she can dribble, she can pass. She is too much to handle for one player to guard her.”

The Westgate coach also said that Corne and Kelley Clancey give Westgate soccer a dual threat and because of those two talented players, the Lady Tigers are in the position to win the district this year and make a run in the playoffs.

Having a player like Corne makes his job easier and he’s not surprised that she has a college soccer offer on the table.

“Not at all,” said Acouetey. “I’ve coached her to do her best and that’s what she gives on the field all the time. Knowing that she was able to use that to get an offer gave me great pride.

“She has the heart and desire to play college soccer.”

It’s because of that heart and desire to play and succeed and practice hard that Corne has developed into a goal-scoring machine for the Lady Tigers.

“It’s just working hard with other players,” said Corne. “That and keeping a level head on the field. When the chance comes, you have to take the opportunity.”

With a game left in the regular season tonight at South Lafourche, Corne still has time before she has to make a decision because the playoffs will begin next week.

When it comes to postseason play, Corne just has one hope for Westgate.

“We’d like to go as far as possible,” said Corne. “We made the second round last year, we’d like to go at least as far as that this year and hopefully one or two rounds further. It would be a great thing to make it to the finals.”
