Further goals to reach

While Catholic High boys soccer team has achieved great things during the regular season, there is always room for something else to be added to the long list of accomplishments, according to four CHS seniors who had a great deal to do with the success the soccer team had this year.

For Grant Quinlan, Paul Breaux, Jordan Durand and Jacob Primeaux the goal now is to go deeper in the playoffs than any other CHS soccer team has advanced.

“We went 22-3-1 this year. It’s the most wins that a soccer team has ever had at Catholic High,” said Quinlan. “We took district undefeated again. We had more seniors this year and we had more younger players involved.

“The program is only going to get better as the years go on.”

Quinlan sums up the attitude of the team as they prepare for the playoffs, which begin this week. CHS will host a first-round game either Friday or Saturday. Pairings will be announced Wednesday.

And after last season’s last minute loss to Country Day, it’s something that has driven the team since practice opened.

“We want to take state, to go all the way,” said Quinlan. “That last minute loss just killed us. It’s something that we’d like to atone for.”

Breaux added that for him, it’s already been a better season this year.

“We’ve improved a lot and it was a great overall season,” he added. “We worked really hard in the offseason and everyone was dedicated, I thought that we’d come out this year looking to break last year’s win record of 18 games.

“For the seniors, we wanted to do a lot better than last year and accomplish more this year.”

Catholic High coach Brandon Francis marvels at what his senior group keeps accomplishing, which includes an undefeated district record for the second straight year, and team records for wins, goals scored (93) and goals allowed (11).

“I count on these leaders,” said Francis. “Jordan Durand is a defender who’s right there with at the top of the scoring lists. Jacob Primeaux plays sweeper and is a huge reason why we allowed only 11 goals this year. Grant Quinlan missed half the season and returned to be the team’s leading scorer. Paul Breaux is the man behind the scenes and doesn’t get enough recognition for filling in when Quinlan was out.

“We’re going to ride them as far as we can in the playoffs.”

Durand thinks about the three bad marks on Catholic High’s record and what could have been.

“They were so close,” said Durand. “We should have beaten those teams. We go out with the mentality that we should win every game.

Durand thinks that CHS has had a good season so far, but if the team can stay focused throughout the playoffs, the Panthers have a good chance to go all the way to state.

Primeaux also thinks that this year’s team made a great strides from last year’s squad that reached the second round of the playoffs, and also thinks about the three losses and what could have been.

He also said teams underestimate the Panthers when they take the field, which works to Catholic High’s advantage

“I feel that we can beat anyone out there,” said Primeaux. “It doesn’t matter how much better the team we’re facing is, we expect to win every time out. Going into the playoffs and taking state would be the greatest thing that we’ve ever done.”
