Westgate fifth in Class 5A

The Westgate Tigers are the lone Teche Area team ranked in the Top 10 in the latest statewide high school basketball polls conducted by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Westgate (24-5) is ranked fifth in the Class 5A boys’ basketball poll released Monday night by the LSWA.

The Tigers (6-2 in District 7-5A) play host to Thibodaux in a district game tonight. WHS had 93 points in the latest poll, with Scotlandville (28-2) ranked first with 144 points and 12 of 12 first-place votes.

Airline (24-5) was second with 132 points, Ouachita (20-7) third with 118 and East Ascension (23-6) fourth with 104.

The only other Teche Area team receiving votes this week was Hanson, which had 15 points in the girls’ Class A poll released Sunday night. The Lady Tigers were two spots out of the Top 10.

In the other boys’ polls, St. Augustine (29-2) was first in Class 4A with nine first-place votes and 141 points, with Peabody (26-1) second after taking three first-place votes and 135 points. Huntington (29-4), Salmen (17-2) and Northside (23-3) round out the top five.

In the boys’ 3A poll, Bossier (25-3) is a unanimous No. 1 with 12 first-place votes. Richwood (24-6) is second, Carroll (16-6) third, Madison (20-4) fourth and Patterson (19-2) fifth.

Patterson travels to New Iberia tonight for a non-district game against the Yellow Jackets, winners of six straight games.

John Curtis (23-2) tops the 2A poll with 10 first-place votes and 142 points. Mansfield (24-5) is second with two first-place votes and 123 points, followed by Riverside (25-6), Dunham (23-6) and Episcopal (24-6).

Christian Life (19-5) slipped past Central Catholic (19-4) for first place in the Class A poll. Each team has six first-place votes, with Christian Life at 138 points and CCHS with 136. White Castle (20-7), Southern Lab (17-10) and Pointe Coupee Central (22-6) round out the top five.

Zwolle (34-4) is the unanimous No. 1 in the B-C poll. Atlanta (27-1) is second, followed by Hornbeck (33-4), Midland (26-3) and Phoenix (27-5).

In the girls’ polls, Southwood (29-0) is No. 1 in 5A with 10 of 11 first-place votes and 131 points. Lafayette (27-0) is second with one first-place vote and 122 points. Walker (25-3), Northshore (25-4) and Natchitoches Central (23-5) are the remaining top five teams.

St. Thomas More (26-2) leads the 4A poll with 10 first-place votes and 131 points. Salmen (21-1) is second with one first-place vote and 112 points. St. Michael (22-7) is third with Vandebilt Catholic (22-4) fourth and Helen Cox (23-6) fifth.

Loyola (23-5) moved up from second to first in 3A with six first-place votes and 126 points. Albany (25-2) had four first-place votes and 120 points to move up from third to second, while St. James (23-5) has one first-place vote and 114 points in falling from first to third. Baker (20-7) and Avoyelles (22-3) round out the top five.

John Curtis (25-4) is No. 1 in Class 2A with 10 first-place votes. Iota (27-3) is second, followed by Pickering (22-4), University (25-4, 1 first-place vote) and Lake Arthur (22-2).

Plain Dealing (19-4) leads the Class A poll with nine first-place votes. Central Catholic (17-3) is second with one first-place vote and Tensas (26-1) has the other first-place vote to come in third. Arcadia (18-6) is fourth and West St. John (21-4) is fifth.

Fairview (32-5) is the unanimous No. 1 in the Class B-C poll, followed by Lacassine (32-1), Pelican (27-3), Saline (32-4) and Anacoco (31-6).쇓
