The Westgate Tigers seem to be replaying the same song again and again, coach Jamar Lewis said after a 10-2 loss to District 7-5A foe Thibodaux on Thursday.
Westgate gave up six unearned runs after committing five errors, blew a handful of sure double plays, and made baserunning mistakes that took them out of potential rally situations.
“We have to make the routine plays,” said Lewis. “We got four double-play balls, and didn’t get any outs — zero. We walked three (THS batters) in the first inning, and we had too many strikeouts.”
Thibodaux scored three runs in the top of the first inning after drawing a pair of walks and a hit batter, on a two-strike count, two of those free passes coming with two out. One run scored on a fielder’s choice and two more came in on Ross Eschete’s single to left field.
Westgate loaded the bases in the bottom of the first on three straight walks, and got a run on a sacrifice fly to deep center field by Dusty Myers. But with runners on the corners and only one out, Thibodaux got the second out when the runner at first tried to steal second base on his own. A popup ended the rally.
WHS scored another run in the second inning to pull to within 3-2, but another baseunning mistake helped THS stay ahead. Stephen Speer walked with one out, moved to second on a hit by Alex Poirrier and went to third on a passed ball. But Thibodaux got the second out after a runner strayed too far off second, and Westgate scored only one run after a walk to Jory Baldwin and a fielding error on a grounder by Kaleb Segura.
The visiting Tigers (13-14 overall, 5-4 district) tacked on four runs in the third inning with the help of a couple of WHS errors. Bo Ockman led off the frame with a solo home run to left field, and after a walk, a fielding error put two runners on. A bunt single was followed by a grounder that resulted in another error on what should have been a double-play. Kob Mader followed with a two-run double to left-center field to push Thibodaux’s lead to 7-2.
A booted ball, compounded by a throwing error, on a potential inning-ending double play grounder in the fourth inning led to two more Thibodaux runs to make it a 9-2 game. Yet another error preceded a sixth-inning run for the 10-2 final.
“They made three crucial mistakes on (potential) double plays,” said THS coach Scott Abadie. “That really hurt them. We hit with men in scoring position. We hadn’t done that in a few games.”
Thibodaux finished with nine hits, with Koby Mader and Justin Zeringue each hitting a single and a double. Mader drove in one run, Zeringue scored three times and Ockman also scored three runs. Eschete drove in three for the Tigers.
“Thibodaux took advantage of our mistakes,” Lewis said.
Poirrier and Blake Latiolais each had two hits for Westgate. Kaleb Segura singled and scored a run, Myers had an RBI, Nick Touriac and Baldwin both singled and Speer scored a run.
Abadie said THS is hoping to improve on its No. 39 spot in the power ratings, starting with a game at Terrebonne today. The Tigers must be more consistent, he said. Thibodaux’s longest win streak of the year is four games.
Westgate (2-23, 1-9), meanwhile, is building for the future with several young players getting playing time.
“Hopefully we’re gaining experience, because it’s tough right now,” said Lewis.
