NISH, WHS athletes headed to state meet

THIBODAUX — New Iberia Senior High’s Casey Moore and Christian Jacob claimed individual titles and several other NISH and Westgate athletes advanced to the state track meet next week at the Class 5A, Region III track and field meet held at Thibodaux High School Thursday.
Moore claimed the shot put title with a toss of 53 feet, 1 1/4 inches and Jacob won the pole vault title with height of 14-6 as NISH scored 55 points in the meet, which was good enough for a third place finish.
Archbishop Rummel won the meet with 69 points and Brother Martin was second with 65 points.
Westgate finished tied for 11th with Bonnabel and Destrehan with 22 points.
Also advancing to the state meet for NISH were Dre Fusilier (second in the shot put), Michael Sam (third in the javelin) and Donovan Jones (second in the 110 meter hurdles).
For Westgate, Jamal Sam was third in both the 100 and 200 meters and the Tigers’ 4×200 meter relay team also advanced to the state meet with a second-place finish.
John Ehret won the girls’ regional title with 60 points and Dominican was second with 57 points. NISH finished fourth with 46 points and Westgate was 13th with 23 points.
Westgate’s Aaliyah Walker won the pole vault with an outdoor personal best of 12-2 and Kaysha Jones won the 400 meter dash in a time of 58.84 seconds. Both will go to the state track meet on Saturday, May 5.
Several NISH athletes advanced to the state meet, led by Chynna Brooks (second in the high jump), Anna Cavalier (tied for second in the pole vault) and Brianne Brooks (second in the 400 meters).
Also advancing to the state meet are Moesha Kinard (third in the shot put) and Dominitra Charles (third in the 300 meter hurdles).
