Torrential downpours contributed to three low-scoring games Friday night at the Iberia Parish Sugar Cane Jamboree.

Two separate downpours that eventually left Lloyd G. Porter Stadium’s playing surface soggy and muddy, helped keep scoring to a minimum in each game, leading to 34 total points.

Delcambre scored with 10 seconds remaining in the opening game to claim a 7-0 win over Jeanerette. Catholic High edged Loreauville 7-6 on the strength of a pair of extra point kicks — one made by CHS and one missed by LHS — in the middle game. In the third game, New Iberia scored in the first half and Westgate scored in the second half to forge a 7-7 tie.

One player for each team was selected as Player of the Game for his squad by the press box crew. The Daily Iberian and Community First Bank sponsored the awards.

Chevaun Walters of Delcambre and Antonio Gage of Jeanerette were Players of the Game for the first contest. Catholic High’s Gabe Fuselier and Loreauville’s Jermaine Antoine were Players of the Game for the second outing. Westgate’s Jamal Sam and New Iberia’s Tyler Archon were Players of the Game for the finale.

Delcambre 7, Jeanerette 0

In a game that looked like it would end in a scoreless tie, Delcambre caught a late break when a Jeanerette punt went only 10 yards, and Reese LeBlanc returned the ball to the 9 with 16 seconds remaining.

On the next play, backup QB Jace Dore completed his only pass of the night, finding Chevaun Walters over the middle for the score with 10 seconds to go. Dylan LeBlanc’s point-after kick made it 7-0.

Dore was the third quarterback of the night for DHS. Sophomore Zachary Trahan came in to the game late in the first half when starter Robert Primeaux was injured on a scramble. Dore, a senior running back, took over at QB in the second half. There was no immediate word on the extent of Primeaux’s injury.

Ashton Eastin led the Panthers with 42 yards rushing on six carries. Walters had two catches for 29 yards, while Dore had one catch for 26 yards.

Abdul Tate led Jeanerette with 45 yards on six runs and one catch for 13 yards. Gage and Bryson Johnson each completed one pass for the Tigers.

Jeanerette opens the season Thursday at Kaplan. Delcambre begins Friday at Erath.

Catholic High 7, Loreauville 6

Gabe Fuselier went 45 yards for a touchdown on a screen pass with 3:34 left in the first half after getting a good block on the edge, and Ethan Poche tacked on the point-after kick to give Catholic High a 7-0 lead at halftime.

Jermaine Antoine scored on a 43-yard run early in the second half to answer for Loreauville, but the point-after kick was wide left. Antoine later returned a punt to the CHS 34 with under two minutes remaining to give the Tigers a chance to take the lead, but was injured on the play. Two plays later, LHS fumbled the ball away and CHS ran the final 1:06 off the clock after recovering at the 25. There was no immediate word on the severity of Antoine’s injury.

CHS quarterback Joe Lissard was intercepted by Loreauville’s John Reed on his first pass attempt on the first snap of the game, but Lissard completed his next four pass attempts to finish 4-for-5 for 73 yards and a TD. Jason Pellerin played the second half under center, completing both of his pass attempts for a total of 3 yards and rushing twice for 23 yards.

Fuselier had three catches for 68 yards and the TD He also returned a punt and two kickoffs.

Antoine led LHS with 63 yards on 9 carries and Spencer Mitchell added 25 yards on 9 rushes.

Loreauville travels to Morgan City’s Tiger Stadium to face Central Catholic on Friday, while Catholic High plays host to Teurlings Catholic on Friday.

Westgate 7, New Iberia 7

In the final game with the field already wet and starting to get muddy from rains that filled much of the night, NISH got on the scoreboard first with a one-yard quarterback keeper by Jason Jones late in the first half. Westgate answered with a one-yard QB keeper by Aaron Bird on its first possession of the second half.

New Iberia took advantage of three penalties against Westgate on its scoring drive, including an unsportsmanlike conduct call that moved the ball half the distance to the goal to the WHS 8 and a facemask that also went for half the distance, setting up Jones’ one-yard keeper with 2:03 to go in the first half. The PAT kick by Cody Sedlitsky made it 7-0.

Westgate was penalized seven times in the first half for 43 yards but only once in the second half, a five-yarder.

The Tigers took advantage of an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty against NISH on their opening drive of the second half, moving the ball to the 9-yard line to set up the sneak by Bird with 10:24 remaining. Bird also kicked the point-after to tie the score.

The closest either team got to the end zone after that was the 25-yard line, which the Tigers reached on the next-to-last play of the game before trying to spike the ball to kill the clock as time ran out.

Sam ran for 88 yards on 10 carries for WHS, including a 31-yard run on the second-to-last play of the game for a first down with three seconds to go.

Archon led New Iberia with 62 yards on 11 carries, while Jones completed four of seven pass attempts for 65 yards. Four different players caught passes.

Westgate plays host to Breaux Bridge at Lloyd G. Porter Memorial Stadium on Thursday, and New Iberia opens the season Friday at Lloyd G. Porter against St. Martinville
