Catholic High looks to be following the blueprint it set last year in rolling to 11 straight wins after an opening loss to Class 4A Teurlings Catholic.
The Panthers threw for a ton of yards in 2011 and got stout play from its defense in reaching the Class 2A quarterfinals.
This season, after an opening loss to Teurlings, the Panthers have won consecutive games behind a passing game that’s averaged nearly 330 yards the past two weeks, and a defense that’s allowed only 162.5 yards a game in that same span.
Teche Area high school football fans rewarded CHS for its efforts this week in an online poll at The Daily Iberian’s Website, voting Catholic High quarterback Joe Lissard the Offensive Player of the Week and linebacker Jared Bullock the Defensive Player of the Week in the survey sponsored by the law firm of Haik, Minvielle and Grubbs, and The Daily Iberian.
Lissard, a senior quarterback, earned 43.9 percent of the vote in a competitive race against four other deserving players who, like Lissard, were nominated by fans online at www.iberianet.com/ sports.
After an open nominating period, the top players for both offensive and defensive honors were selected by the sports staff of The Daily Iberian for inclusion in the Haik, Minvielle & Grubbs Law Firm/Daily Iberian Player of the Week poll. Fans then vote for their favorites with the top vote-getter on offense and defense receiving Player of the Week honors. A special T-shirt and certificate will be presented to the players from Haik, Minvielle & Grubbs and The Daily Iberian.
Lissard had an outstanding night in a 37-20 win at North Vermilion in the third week, completing 21 of 34 pass attempts for 376 yards and five touchdowns.
Other nominees included Jermaine Antoine of Loreauville, who received 33.2 percent of the fan vote after rushing for 207 yards and four TDs on 13 carries and catching four passes for 75 yards and a TD in a 57-41 win at Westminster Christian; Tyler Archon of New Iberia, who got 13.5 percent of the fan vote after rushing for 109 yards and two TDs on 19 carries in a 41-34 win at No. 4 Acadiana; Jason Jones of NISH, who had 8.9 percent of the vote after completing 20 of 28 pass attempts for 286 yards and two TDs and rushing for another score in the win over AHS; and Jarion Brown of Franklin, who completed 10 of 21 passes for 108 yards with a TD and rushed for 41 yards on 12 carries with a TD in a 42-40 overtime win against Opelousas.
Bullock, a senior linebacker, received 68.7 percent of the fan vote after making eight solo tackles with one assist in the Panthers’ win. Johnny Casares of NISH had 31.3 percent of the fan vote.
Nominations for Player of the Week on offense and defense will be taken beginning after tonight’s local games. Fans can nominate a player by posting a comment at the end of the online story asking for nominations at www. iberianet.comsports. Fans are asked to include reasons for the nomination, which could include statistics or big plays that contribute to their team’s success.
