Edward Bashay

A Home Going celebration will be held for Mr. Edward Bashay, 81, at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 29, 2012, at Star Pilgrim Baptist Church, New Iberia, with the Rev. Shawn Watson officiating. He will await the resurrection in St. Matthew Cemetery, New Iberia.

A gathering of family and friends will be on Saturday at the Church 7 a.m. until the time of service; with a 10:30 a.m. Ritual by the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity.

A native and resident of New Iberia, Mr. Bashay passed on September 25, 2012, at Iberia Medical Center. Edward accepted the Lord and was baptized at an early age at Star Pilgrim Baptist Church by the Rev. John Parker. He was a faithful and willing servant always available to assist others and serve on various committees. He served as Finance Committee chairperson for 15 plus years.

Edward Bashay graduated with the first graduating class of Jonas Henderson High School in New Iberia, Grambling College in Grambling, where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree and the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, where he received his Master of Education.

After graduating from college, he enlisted and served in the United States Army with a tour of duty in Okinawa, Japan, and was honorably discharged in 1956.

Mr. Bashay was a retired educator who served the Iberia Parish School District for 37 years. He was a General Science and Math teacher at Jonas Henderson High School; Physical Science teacher at New Iberia Freshman High and New Iberia Senior High. Shortly thereafter, he became an assistant principal at New Iberia Senior High School.

Mr. Bashay was a Deputy Marshal for the city of New Iberia, a member of the Louisiana City Marshal Association; a member of Rho Omicron Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., and also an avid bowler with the local bowling league.

He is survived by wife, Sharon Lee Bashay, of New Iberia. His children are sons Edward Dwayne Bashay of Los Angeles, David Michael Bashay (Tracela) of Houston; two daughters Carla Vanessa Brockett of Chesapeake, Va., and Felicia Kay Bashay of Baton Rouge. His stepchildren are Joshua Wilson, Port Arthur, Texas, Mervin Wilson Jr. of Broussard, Jabiari Lee of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Shatarra Lee of New Iberia; his brother Harold Richard Bashay Sr. (Annie) of Portsmouth, Va. His grandchildren Lionel Nicholas Bashay and Ashley Dayatra Bashay of Baton Rouge, Edward Andre Bashay of Los Angeles, Kiera Latrelle Bashay, Davion Michael Bashay and Jennaie Nicole Bashay all of Houston; and great-granddaughter Bailey Von Evans of Baton Rouge. Step-grandchildren are LeBron Simon, Brooklyn Simon, Asaiah Wilson, Ashton Wilson, Tyraia Lee and Iejah Lee. Godchildren are Melody Dawn Ford, Nevillyn LaGrange, Neville Syrie Jr. and Beverly Johnson.

Mr. Bashay was preceded in death by his parents; his sister Mary Yvonne Bashay; niece Pauline Bashay Mitchell; and sister-in-law Geraldine Allen Bashay.

Also left to cherish his memories are his nieces and nephews that he helped his parents rear, other beloved nieces and nephews, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and cousins.

Active pallbearers will be Joshua Wilson, Todd Manuel, Kenneth Bashay, O’neil Jones Jr., Victor Jones and Karl Bashay.

Honorary pallbearers will be Edward Dwayne Bashay, David Michael Bashay, Harold R. Bashay Sr., David Manuel Jr., Mervin Wilson Jr., Lionel Bashay, O’neil Jones Sr., Vic Delcambre, Judge Robert Segura, James Watson, Dennis “Johnny” Williams and Brannon Simon.
