Record 22 teams set for NISH tourney

A record 22 volleyball teams are set to hit three gymnasium floors Saturday as the 2012 New Iberia Senior High/Community First Bank Volleyball Tournament takes place at both NISH and Catholic High.

“We’ve had 16 teams in the tournament before but never 22,” said NISH volleyball coach Ron Hebert. “Then we still had to turn away some teams that wanted to come and play.

At NISH, two courts in the boys’ gym and the court in the girls’ gym will be in use as 12 teams battle for the Gold Division Championship starting at 9 a.m.

Host NISH will play in Pool A with Iota, Edna Karr, St. Thomas More, Acadiana and Leesville while Pool B will consist of Breaux Bridge, De La Salle, Parkview Baptist, St. Martinville Senior High, Comeaux and Carencro.

At Catholic High, the Black Division will be contested with 10 teams divided in two pools starting at 8 a.m. Pool A consists of Catholic High, Delcambre, Franklin, Northside and Thibodaux while Pool B has Westgate, West St. Mary, Highland Baptist, North Vermilion and Iowa.

Finals for the Black Division, which will be between the winners of Pool A and Pool B, are set for 6 p.m. while the finals for the Gold Division, also between the winners of Pool A and Pool B are set for 7 p.m.

At NISH, the Lady Jackets will play at 9 a.m. against St. Thomas More, 11 a.m. against Iota, 1 p.m. against Leesville and at 3 p.m. against Karr. All games will be in the boys’ Gym.

St. Martinville Senior High is scheduled to play Comeaux at 9 a.m., Parkview Baptist at 11 a.m. and De LaSalle at 4 p.m. in the boys’ gym and Carencro at 1 p.m. in the girls’ gym.

At Catholic High, the CHS Lady Panthers are scheduled to play Delcambre at 8 a.m., Thibodaux at 10 a.m., Northside at noon and Franklin at 4 p.m.

Westgate will play Highland Baptist at 8 a.m., Iowa at 10 a.m., North Vermilion at noon and West St. Mary at 4 p.m.

In addition to playing Westgate, Highland Baptist is set to play West St. Mary at 11 a.m., Iowa at 1 p.m. and North Vermilion at 3 p.m.

Delcambre will play Franklin at 11 a.m., Thibodaux at 1 p.m. and Northside at 3 p.m. in addition to the game against Catholic High. 

Franklin will also play Northside at 9 a.m. and Thibodaux at 2 p.m. while West St. Mary will play North Vermilion at 9 a.m. and Iowa at 2 p.m.

“We’ve got some good teams coming in this year,” said Hebert. 

“Teams like St. Martinville, St. Thomas More and Breaux Bridge, which has won 20 games this year. 

“Leesville and Parkview Baptist each have good teams this year along with De LaSalle, which has won 15 games this year. It promises to have good volleyball competition Saturday.”
