With no chance of making the playoffs, the Westgate Tigers took out a season’s worth of frustration on District 7-5A rival H.L. Bourgeois Friday night in the regular season finale for both teams.

The Tigers spotted Bourgeois the first points of the game, then roared and scored 56 straight points in taking a 63-14 win over the Braves.

“It came full circle for our guys,” said Westgate coach Ryan Antoine, whose team finished the year with a three-game winning streak. “They struggled early in the season but kept playing. We started hitting our stride and it became fun for us.

“We went through anything you can go through and for these guys to come out tonight and execute in all phases of the game, I couldn’t be happier as a coach.”

That the Tigers played well in all phases of the game is a bit of an understatement. In fact, Westgate scored just about every way possible in the football game.

Like some offense? Westgate had three offensive touchdowns.

Like some defense? The Tigers had three defensive scores.

Like special teams? They had you covered there also, with three special teams scores.

“It was as testament to the year. It brought everything full circle for us,” said Antoine. “We’ve been waiting to win all facets of the game and score in all facets of the game. We did all those things tonight. They wanted to play and they wanted to keep playing even after the game was over.”

On the other side of the field, it was about as disappointing a loss as Bourgeois (2-8 overall, 0-6 district) has had all year. In fact, the 63 points the Braves allowed was the most they’ve given up in a game all year.

What possibly made it worse was that Bourgeois actually led 8-0 in the first quarter as a Westgate fumble was converted into a 15-yard touchdown pass from Jake Broggi to Chris Harris. Then the same duo connected on the 2-point conversion.

But after that brief flurry of points, it all fell apart for the Braves.

How fast? About as fast as it took for Westgate’s Trevonte Williams to return the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. After that, there was no stopping the Tigers (3-7, 2-4).

“That’s the story of our season,” said Bourgeois interim coach Randy Breaux. “We’re so inconsistent. Then when things started turning against us, we compound one bad play after another.”

And the Tigers were only happy to convert bad plays into points.

Bryson Broussard had two touchdown runs; Aaron Bird threw two touchdown passes; Anthony Dugas had a 32 yard fumble recovery for a score; Tyland Gregoire added a 30 yard interception return for a touchdown; James Walker had a 25 yard blocked punt return for touchdown and for the final touchdown of the year, Torey Jones ran a kickoff back for a score after a Broggi to DeAndre Woods touchdown pass late in the game.

“We started off as we wanted and we thought we could control them,” said Breaux. “In the end we were just undermanned on the outside where they have speed and size. They found the matchup that were favorable to them and took advantage of it.”

Westgate only had 195 offensive yards in the game, but the Tigers didn’t need much offense because of all the special teams and defensive scores. Westgate’s defense held Bourgeois to 120 offensive yards, the majority of which came on a fourth quarter touchdown drive that cut the lead to 56-14.

“It was important that we come out and play well, especially for the seniors” said WHS senior lineman Josh Boutte, who accepted an invitation to play in the US Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio in January earlier Friday. “It was a very emotional game for us. It was shock to go down 8-0, but we rallied and it turned out to be a different ball game.

“That was the most important thing for me. To set a good example for the younger guys for next year’s team and to do that tonight was a great way to go out as a senior.”
