Lady Jackets win title

New Iberia started hitting shots in the championship game of the Westgate Lady Tiger Classic basketball tournament Saturday that wouldn’t fall earlier in the tourney, and pulled away from Ursuline Academy for a 60-49 win.
The Lady Jackets improved to 9-0 with their second tournament championship of the season.
“We just want to play that man-to-man fullcourt defense, and they turned it over a few times,” said NISH coach Robert Pinckney. “Against Central Catholic (in the semifinals) we were struggling to hit some shots.We just got some shots to fall. We came out in the third quarter and continued that.”
Ursuline led 16-15 after one quarter but New Iberia outscored the Lions 21-8 in the second period and 15-12 in the third to open the game up.
Kierra Anthony had 23 points and Moesha Kinard added 21 for the Lady Jackets.
“Kierra Anthony hit some big shots,” said Pinckney. “Moesha hit some big shots as well. We knew going in (Ursuline) only played five players. She got a sixth player in the game, but we figured we could wear them down and that’s what happened.”
Jenna Deemer had 22 points and Asaunti Allen had 14 for Ursuline Academy.
Anthony was named tournament MVP and Kinard was joined by Deemer, McKinley’s Brianna Brown and Central Catholic’s Meo Knight on the All-Tournament Team.
NISH also awarded the team trophy to captain Uri Jolivette for her play in the tourney.
New Iberia travels to Mamou on Tuesday.
Central Catholic 39, Westgate 32
In the third-place game Saturday, Central Catholic jumped ahead 13-7 after one quarter and held on as Westgate cut the gap in the third quarter.
CCHS led 21-16 at halftime and 29-24 after three quarters.
Meo Knight led the Lady Eagles with 16 points and Randi Brown had 11.
Anastagha Williams led Westgate (6-3) with 11 points. Kadeisha Mitchell and Diamonique Curvin had 6 each.
McKinley 75, West St. Mary 42
In the consolation semifinals Saturday, McKinley scored 49 first-half points to beat the Lady Wolves.
Alexis Cross had 12 points, Gentrell Wells added 10 and Amber Joe had 8 to lead WSM.
Individual scorers were not available for McKinley.
Ursuline 50, Westgate 46
In the semifinals Saturday, Ursuline outscored Westgate 21-6 in the fourth quarter to advance.
Westgate led 13-11 at the end of one quarter, 23-19 at halftime and 40-29 after three quarters.
But Jenna Deemer scored 10 of her game-high 21 points in the fourth quarter on two 3-pointers and 4-of-4 free throw shooting to power Ursuline to the win.
Kadeisha Mitchell had 13 points for Westgate. Diamonique Curvin added 12 and Alexis Charles had 11.
Abbeville 36, Comeaux 33
In the fifth-place game, Abbeville scored 8 points, all at the foul line, in overtime to claim a win over Comeaux. The Lady Spartans, who rallied to tie the game at 28-all in the fourth quarter, had 5 points in the extra period.
Abbeville led 6-4 after one quarter 12-11 at halftime and 19-16 after three quarters.
Derrian Nolan had 7 points, all on free throws in the fourth quarter and overtime, and Arrayia Starlard also had 7 points, all in the second half and OT, to lead Abbeville. Nolan was 3-for-5 and Starland 2-for-2, and Bianca Levy went 3-for-4 at the foul line in OT.
Ashley Buras had 9 points and Lauren Marker had 8 points for Comeaux.
Opelousas 46, Loreauville 19
In the consolation bracket Friday, Opelousas led 12-4 after one quarter and 29-12 at halftime.
Taylor Jacob led Loreauville with 10 points and Shantajah Vitale had 6.
Individual scorers for Opelousas were not available.
West St. Mary 51, Patterson 30
Gentrell Wells and Alexis Cross each scored 12 points as West St. mary eliminated Patterson from the Westgate Tournament with a 51-30 win Friday.
Amber Joe added 8 points for the Lady Wolfpack,who advanced to the consolation bracket semifinals against McKinley, which lost to Ursuline Friday.
Jasman Evans led Patterson with 7 points and Telka Butler added 6 points.
New Iberia 56, Central Catholic 45
NISH outscored Central Catholic 20-7 in the second quarter to take command in the semifinals.
Kierra Anthony had 24 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to lead the Lady Jackets. Uri Jolivette added 15 points and Moesha Kinard had 11.
Meo Knight led CCHS with 33 points, going 10-for-13 from the foul line. Randi Brown had two 3-pointers in scoring 11 points.
McKinley 42, Opelousas 34
In the consolation finals, McKinley came from behind in the fourth quarter to win.
OHS led 18-17 at halftime and 25-24 after three quarters but the Panthers got 18 points in the fourth period for the win, holding Opelousas to 9 in the period.
Individual scorers were not available.
Opelousas 55, Franklin 30
In the consolation semifinals, Opelousas roared out to a 28-11 halftime lead on the way to a win.
Quanta Jones led Franklin with 8 points.
Fabian Small, C Parker and Wynesha Jenkins had 7 each.
