Second-graders and members of the New Iberia Garden Club pose for a picture after the club had trees planted at the school in January.

Second-grade students of Park Elementary are pictured with the school representatives and members of the New Iberia Garden Club who sponsored the planting of three live oak trees on the school grounds on Admiral Doyle Drive.

In honor of Arbor Day, Dr. Seuss’ book “I Can Name 50 Trees Today” was read to the second-graders by Harriet Boudreaux, Virginia Minvielle and Darnelle Delcambre. They also brought cuttings of different local trees such as live oak, pine, orange, bay leaf and sweet olive. A question-and-answer session yielded prizes for the correct answers. The trees were planted by garden club member Sylvia Grabert, with the cooperation of Iberia Parish School Board representative Randy Viator.

The New Iberia Garden Club meets the first Friday of each month at Parkview Library and supports community beautification awareness through the Cleanest City Contest, Habitat for Humanity Landscape Projects, Arbor Day, Butterfly Gardens and the annual Tour of Homes in April.
