The First Church of God in Christ of Jeanerette and the community celebrated National Black History Month during the Month of February with a series of meaningful activities.
The theme, “At the Crossroads of Freedom and Equality,” focused on role model portrayals, children and youth drill team performances, poetry contests, musical renditions of black history events, drama and health fairs.
The Rev. James W. Proctor, church pastor, said the 2014 Pacesetter Awards were recently presented during a morning worship service to four outstanding role models that have made noteworthy contributions to the school, the church and the community.
Among the Pacesetters were the Rev. Arthur Alexander, Iberia Parish School Board member and Pastor of First Jerusalem Baptist Church in Jeanerette and Marvin Grogan, City of Jeanerette Chief of Police.
Michael Lewis Sr. and Trasheena Gage, of New Iberia, were recognized for their church service at First Church of God in Christ.
A reception honoring the Pace Setters were held in the church’s Multipurpose Room following the special service.
Proctor challenged those in attendance of the program to continue striving for excellence in the community, parish and state.
