School-related small projects get priority in Iberia

The biggest single part of the Iberia Parish School Board’s $50 million bond proposition from two years ago — a $13 million elementary school on 22 acres behind Belle Place Middle School — is low on the priority list as numerous smaller projects are underway.

Smaller but still major projects like the installation of artificial turf for New Iberia Senior High School and Westgate High School and the new Loreauville High School football stadium are being done on a priority basis, said Dale Henderson, Iberia Parish superintendent of schools.

“Of course Loreauville, since they (the football team) don’t have an alternate place to play, the completion of that field is a top priority,” Henderson said last week. “We’re working on having that ready before football season begins.”

Henderson estimated the project will cost $1 million, but gauging how much individual projects within each school’s budget is difficult.

Projects like the $2,492,2000 parishwide surveillance camera installation in public elementary and middle schools, which Henderson said would be completed in mid-fall, are tackled in various locations until completion. The $50 million budget figure was determined by adding up the estimated costs for updates per institution, said the School Board’s Director of Business and Operations Robert Norris.

“This (amount) is what we planned to do at each location throughout the parish, but it’s a total,” said Norris. “We didn’t put a budget figure for each individual type of project. We did it by location.”

Norris used the $5 million technology project budget, with endeavors like replacing obsolete computers, installing interactive whiteboards and purchasing e-readers and iPads, as an example of one that is only partially spent because it is ongoing.

Henderson said the following projects are underway:

• Stadium work for Jeanerette Senior High School, NISH and Loreauville High

• Caneview Elementary School’s parking and storage building

• Painting Coteau Elementary School and North Street Elementary

• A storage building at Johnston-Hopkins Elementary School

• Jefferson Island Elementary’s additional parking and storage building

• North Lewis Elementary’s additional concrete and storage building

• Park Elementary’s concrete and storage building.

Harry Lopez, general operations manager for the School Board, said additional work needs to be completed in the following locations the Alternative Center for Education, Anderson Middle School, Belle Place Middle School, Coteau Elementary School, Daspit Road Elementary School, Delcambre Elementary School, Dodson Elementary School, the phone system at the Agricultural Center, Iberia Middle School, Jeanerette Elementary School, Magnolia Elementary School, North Street Elementary School, Pesson Elementary School, St. Charles Elementary School Sugarland Elementary School, and the board’s administration building.

The bond proposition was approved by Iberia Parish voters in October 2013.
