- Crews seeks office as mayor of New Iberia
Roy Crews III announced his candidacy for New Iberia mayor Friday, July 22, by qualifying for the race at the Iberia Parish Clerk of Court office.
Crews, 63, graduated from Catholic High School in 1971 and the University of New Orleans in 2001. Crews retired from the Department of Children and Family Services after working there for 17 years.
Crews said his platform centers around “less government and more choices” for the people of New Iberia.
“I think the people on the (New Iberia City) Council have been fairly good shepherds fiscally, but I want my efforts to start where they stop,” he said.
“I want to see if we can get cheaper source of sand, gravel, paper, for the city and take a hard look at regulations.”
Crews said he would also like to end New Iberia’s contract with the Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office for law enforcement services and re-establish a New Iberia Police Department.
“I think it’s important for the sovereignty of the city,” Crews said.
“We should look at why it is people prefer to live in Youngsville and Broussard rather than New Iberia. If we dug into that we might find (some answers).”
