Descendant discloses life of historical figure

Bertram Hayes-Davis is a great-great-grandson of Jefferson Davis. He will talk about the accomplishments of his ancestor on Saturday, Aug. 27 at the Young-Sanders Center for the Study of the War Between the States in Louisiana located at 701 Teche Drive in Franklin.

Bertram Hayes-Davis will talk about his family’s political contributions to history through his PowerPoint presentation, “The Life of Jefferson Davis” at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 27 at the Young-Sanders Center for the Study of the War Between the States in Louisiana, located at 701 Teche Drive in Franklin.

Hayes-Davis, a great-great-grandson of Jefferson Davis, is deeply committed to educating the public about the life and legacy of his ancestor, according to a prepared statement from the Young-Sanders Center.

Hayes-Davis has served since 1976 as president of the Davis Family Association and since 1988 as president of the Papers of Jefferson Davis. He is the former executive director of Beauvoir, the last home of Jefferson Davis and the Presidential Library in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Over the last 40 years, Hayes-Davis has traveled and spoken at a majority of Davis sights throughout the country. He has been interviewed by Life and People magazines and USA Today online. He was part of The History Channel’s Civil War Documentary and has had numerous online interviews, including CBS Sunday Morning.

He has recently written a series of op-ed articles that have been published in Mississippi, Texas, Kentucky and Virginia and is directly quoted nationally about his great-great grandfather on the many issues confronting the country today.

According to the statement, the Jefferson Davis Foundation’s mission is to support opportunities and exhibits to educate the public about the life of Jefferson Davis. Hayes-Davis and his wife, Carol, travel the country speaking on behalf of the Foundation. He is engaged in the efforts to preserve the statues of Jefferson Davis throughout the country as a tribute to an American statesman and historic figure. The Foundation creates educational opportunities to experience the life of Jefferson Davis, including speaking on Mississippi River trips.

Hayes-Davis has traveled and toured numerous Civil War battlefields throughout the South. His perspective is unique in reference to his ancestor and the events of the conflict. He lectures throughout the country on the Civil War and Jefferson Davis.

Hayes-Davis has a Master’s of Science in Geology and spent 16 years in the oil and gas exploration business in Dallas. Four of those years were spent traveling in Russia. He has held numerous positions in the non-profit sector in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

In the financial industry for J.P. Morgan, he has been a trust advisor and consulted as vice president head of oil and gas management in Dallas. He and his wife currently live in Gulfport, Mississippi.

The Young-Sanders Center is located at 701 Teche Drive in Franklin. The building faces the Bayou Teche one block from the St. Mary Parish Court House.
