Mavis Frugé honored ‘Living Legend’

Mavis Arnaud Frugé, director of the Jacques Arnaud French Studies and vice president of the NUNU Arts and Culture Collective Board of Directors, was inducted into the Order of Living Legend July 28 at the Acadian Memorial in St. Martinville.

In 2014, Frugé joined the Acadian Memorial Foundation Board in St. Martinville. On April 14, 2015, the French Government awarded her the Ordre des Palmes Academiques award at the 2015 Louisiana Culture Awards Ceremony. Since inception, Frugé has participated in various roles at the Arnaudville Area Chamber of Commerce, including serving on the board of directors chair for its 200 Club.

The Living Legends series honors individuals who have helped shape and define the Cajun culture. The program is hosted by the Acadian Museum of Erath, a nonprofit organization, and is held at the Museum Café located next door to the Acadian Museum. Frugé has been involved with many CODOFIL events and hosted over 400 Francophone guests.

In 2013, Frugé received the Lt. Governor’s Prix de la Franco-Responsabilité for her efforts in preserving the French language.Also, for her many volunteer efforts, the Opelousas-St. Landry Parish Chamber of Commerce named her its 2010 “Woman of the Year.”

Frugé married Richard Frugé and they are the parents of three daughters, 10 grandchildren and great grandchildren.
