Playoff positions shape up for boys

The regular season wraps up Friday for Teche Area boys’ basketball teams, and the Louisiana High School Athletic Association will release its basketball playoff brackets for its various classes and divisions Monday.
First-round playoff games are to be played Thursday and Friday, Feb. 23-24.
On Tuesday, the LHSAA released its last unofficial power rankings before the playoffs and for many Teche Area teams, possible first-round playoff opponents have been narrowed down.
In Class 5A, New Iberia Senior High (18.00) was seventh in the power rankings just behind District 3-5A rival Lafayette (18.03) and ahead of Ruston (17.17).
NISH closes the regular season Friday at Sam Houston and could surge past LHS for sixth in the power rankings, or finish seventh.
Potential first-round opponents for the Yellow Jackets include 24th seed Pineville (14.39), 25th seed East St. John (14.12) or 26th seed East Jefferson (13.93).
In Class 4A, Westgate (18.74) was third in the power rankings behind Bossier (19.45) and ahead of Woodlawn-Shreveport (18.55). The Tigers, who finished Friday at home against Abbeville, most likely finish in third place although they could be jumped by Woodlawn and finish in fourth.
Potential first-round opponents for WHS include 29th seed and District 5-4A rival Breaux Bridge (12.81), 30th seed Warren Easton (12.20) or 31st seed West Ouachita (12.14).
St. Martinville Senior High (15.14) was the 13th seed in 4A, behind LaGrange (15.61) and ahead of McDonogh 35 (15.00).
Potential first-round matchups for SMSH, which finishes Friday at home against Cecilia, include 20th seed Huntington (14.33), 21st seed Salmen (14.27), 22nd seed Morgan City (14.06) or 23rd seed and district rival Cecilia (14.06).
In Class 3A, neither Franklin (43rd seed, 9.21) nor Erath (50th, 8.31) will make the postseason this year. Erath closes the regular season at home against E.D. White while Franklin finishes at home against Patterson
In Class 2A, District 6-2A champion West St. Mary was the 14th seed (12.40), behind Red River (12.45) and ahead of Jonesboro-Hodge (11.78). The Wolfpack should end up either the 13th or 14th seed with a home playoff opener potentially against 19th seed East Feliciana (11.10), 20th seed Springfield (10.91) or 21st seed Doyle (10.86).
Jeanerette was the 27th seed (9.87), behind Cohen College Prep (9.91) and ahead of Bunkie (9.60). Potential first-round contests for the Tigers include sixth seed North Caddo (15.31) or seventh seed Sophie B. Wright (14.94)
Loreauville (9.09) is sitting on the bubble as the 32nd seed, behind Rosepine (9.30) and ahead of French Settlement (8.88). If the Tigers hold on and get in, the most likely first-round opponent will be top seeded Madison Prep (24.21), which is far ahead of second seed Rayville (18.22).
West St. Mary travels to Jeanerette today and Loreauville travels to Catholic High today to wrap up the regular season.
In Class A, Centerville (12.74) is pretty much locked into the eighth seed, behind Arcadia (13.54) and head of North Central (11.85).
Potential first-round matchups for the Bulldogs include 24th seed Beekman Charter (9.02), 25th seed Kentwood (8.71) and 26th seed Basile (8.17)
Centerville plays host to Highland Baptist Friday in its regular season finale.
In Division III, Catholic High (9.23) is the 18th seed behind Ouachita Christian (9.48) and ahead of Pope John Paul II (9.15). The most likely first-round opponent for the Panthers is 15th seed Notre Dame (10.29) although 16th seed Lee Magnet (10.23) could jump ahead of the Pioneers.
In Division IV, Hanson (7.77) is the 18th seed, just behind Catholic High of Pointe Coupee (7.79) and ahead of False River (7.67). Depending on what happens Thursday and Friday, the Tigers could end up seeded anywhere from 17th through 19th.
Potential opponents for HMS include 14th seed Ascension Christian (8.48), 15th seed Cedar Creek (8.11) and 16th seed Ascension Catholic (8.10).
Hanson closes at home Friday against Gueydan.
Highland Baptist (5.73) is the 22nd seed behind St. Edmund of Eunice (5.83) and ahead of Ridgewood (5.29). The Bears’ potential first-round opponents included 10th seed Westminster Christian (9.43), 11th seed St. John of Plaquemine (8.98) and 12th seed St. Frederick on Monroe (8.63).
In Division V, ESA (13.88) is locked into the fourth seed behind Crescent City Christian in Metairie (14.63) and ahead of Family Christian of Baton Rouge (12.94).
The potential first-round opponent for the Falcons is most likely 13th seed Lutheran High School of Metairie (6.85) which is behind First Baptist Christian (7.42) and ahead of St. Joseph’s of Plaucheville (6.50).
ESA finishes up the regular season Friday on the road at Westminster Christian.
