The current undefeated heavyweight boxer and former St. Martinville High School football star took on Carlos Sandoval in an undercard fight Tuesday night at the Rapides Parish Coliseum. Jones took down his competitor midway through the second round when the referee stopped the fight after Sandoval appeared woozy and unable to gain his footing following a barrage of punches thrown by Jones.

With the victory, Jones is now 21-0-2 with 12 KOs in his career.

Jones came out aggressively in the first round landing a slew of body shots on Sandoval but the Mexican-born Sandoval countered with a few shots late in the first round. After a talk with trainer Maurice “Termite” Watkins, Jones came out in the second round even more focused.

Jones continued to attack Sandoval with punches to his body and shoulder area. After a fierce combination near Sandoval’s corner, Sandoval began to briefly stagger as he walked to the center of the ring. The referee was monitoring Sandoval closely and soon stepped in to call the fight.

Earlier in the evening, middleweight Kelvin “Hot Sauce” Henderson won the opening bout of the night as he recorded a first-round TKO against Engelberto Valenzuela, and then cruiserweight Edwin Rodriguez took care of Melvin Russell as he won with a TKO in the second round.

The local fight fans showed their enthusiasm with the final two fights prior to the televised portion of the card on Fox Sports 1.

Alexandria’s Brandon Shavers made his pro debut with a middleweight fight against Phillip Jean Seide. In the third round, Seide knocked down Shavers but was later disqualified for hitting Shavers while the local fighter was down on the mat.

The next fight was an all-Louisiana bout as Clay Burns of Alexandria took on Josh Ross of West Monroe in a rematch of a fight that ended in a draw in April of 2016. Burns drew loud applause when he appeared to be close to knocking down Ross in the second and third rounds. The knockout never came and that proved to be the difference, as Ross one by split decision which drew the ire of the home crowd.

The sixth fight of the night was a heavyweight bout between Charles Martin and Michael Marrone. The 10-round fight didn’t last long as Martin knocked out Marrone in the first round.

Ahmed Elbiale and Christopher Booker then squared off in a lightweight bout that didn’t last very long either. Elbiale remained undefeated as he knocked out Brooker in the second round.

The main event between featherweights Miguel Flores and Chris Avalos didn’t go the distance either. Flores knocked down Avalos in the third but Avalos fought back in the next two rounds, and did enough damage, including a cut above the eye, that doctors stopped the fight after the fifth round.

The final fight of the night was between junior welterweights Ryan Karl and Carlos Velasquez which Karl won by unanimous decision.
