The Iberia Parish Council’s executive committee will discuss the results of a months-long initiative to streamline the parish’s Home Rule Charter at Wednesday night’s meeting.
An ad-hoc committee was created in June and met semi-regularly to go through the home rule charter to slice out redundancies and provide any changes that were seen fit. The committee, which was comprised of parish residents, council members and Iberia Parish President Larry Richard, wrapped up the deliberations earlier this month.
Three charter amendments will be addressed specifically Wednesday. The first proposition would decrease the number of Iberia Parish Council members from 14 to nine, a controversial measure that most likely will be a separate ballot item from the rest of the amendments if it gets forwarded to an election.
The second measure would adjust the pay for the IPC chairperson to $14,000 a year, and other IPC members to $12,200 a year. The third amendment would set the parish president’s pay at $120,000 annually.
In other business, the IPC will hear from Registrar of Voters Mildred Adams, who is announcing her retirement effective Nov. 1.
Adams, who has served in the position 42 years, said she was stepping down to spend more time with her family. She also will be recommending Chief Deputy Registrar Frankie Rideaux to replace her, she said Monday.
The position of registrar is appointed by the Parish Council. A special announcement will be made during the meeting for application procedures related to those who wish to apply for the position.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Iberia Parish Courthouse.
