Warren Paul Barras

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 27, 2017, at Nativity of Our Lady Catholic Church in New Iberia for Warren Paul Barras, 79, who passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2017, in New Iberia. Entombment will follow in the church mausoleum.

Rev. Ed Degeyter will be the celebrant.

A gathering of family and friends will be Thursday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia. A Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. followed by the eulogy. Visitation will continue on Friday from 8 a.m. until 9:45 a.m.

A native and lifelong resident, Mr. Barras was born on March 4, 1938, to the late Wesley and Ruby LeBlanc Barras, and was a retired certified public accountant. He was very active in his church serving the Parish Council and also as a Eucharistic Minister and Sacristan. Mr. Barras was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 12997, where he served as financial secretary, past president of the Royal Ancient Order of Creole Gourmets, past officer of AICP and was a member of the Day Lily Society. He served on several committees including the American Heart Association, Social Service Center, Lydia Cancer Association, State Board of CPA’s and was a volunteer at Iberia Medical Center. At a young age, Mr. Barras was known as the best roller skater in town. A former Cub Scout Master of Troop 327, he helped coach his son’s baseball and football teams and enjoyed dancing and Cajun music.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Bumgarner Barras, of New Iberia; sons Paul Barras and wife, Collin, of Arizona, Doyle Barras and wife, Catherine, of Dallas, Texas and Hank Porter and wife, Jessica, of Houston, Texas; daughters Tricia Vilcan and husband, Tommy, of New Iberia, Anne Koepfinger and husband, Paul, of King George, Virginia, Margaret Porter Arrant and husband, Chad, of Lake Charles, Marie Porter Guidry and husband, Mike, of Lafayette and Molly Porter Bourque and husband, Trinity, of Abbeville; brother Wayne Barras and wife, Rose, of Lafayette; sisters Lois Thompson and husband, Ray, of Morgan City and Ethel Mouton of Abbeville; sister-in-law Paddy Barras of Houston, Texas; daughter-in-law Stephanie Barras of Lafayette; aunts Irene LeBlanc Dugas of New Iberia, Katherine Barras Boudreaux of New Iberia and Helen Hackney of Charlotte, North Carolina; uncle Alexson Barras of Bridge City, Texas; 27 grandchildren; one grandchild due in February of 2018; and two great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Penny Barras; a brother Carrol Barras; and a son-in-law Mike Roth.

Pallbearers will be Stephen Vilcan, Timmy Barras, Shayne Issac, Jean Paul Barras, Joseph Barras and Andrew Vilcan.

Honorary pallbearers include Harold Myers, Mike Degeyter, Ray Thompson, Rudy Delcambre, Harold Tauzin, Freddie Davis, Jerry Savoie, Larry Castille, Ian Koepfinger and Jim Foret.
