Jeanerette’s Sparrow, New Iberia’s Landry honored

- Devin Landry of New Iberia Senior High School was voted the Defensive Player of the Week in an online poll of Teche Area high school football fans at The Daily Iberian's Website. The poll is sponsored by the law firm of Haik, Minvielle & Grubbs.
Shonathan Sparrow of Jeanerette High School rolled up big all-purpose numbers in the Tigers’ 58-20 win over District 7-2A rival Franklin Senior High this past Friday, and was rewarded for his efforts by fans of Teche Area high school football.

New Iberia Senior High School freshman Devin Landry played a big role in the Yellow Jackets’ 28-27 win over Comeaux High, and was likewise rewarded with Player of the Week honors in an online poll conducted at The Daily Iberian’s website.
Sparrow and Landry each earned the Player of the Week honors by garnering the most votes in the weekly poll at iberianet.com/sports to beat out worthy contenders from other area squads.
Fans nominate players from Teche Area schools following each week’s games and then vote for their favorites from among those listed in the poll by the sports staff of The Daily Iberian. Nominations are made beginning each Friday by posting a comment to the story at www.iberianet.com/sports asking for nominations. Nominations conclude on Monday and voting begins Monday afternoon at www.iberianet.com, ending on Thursday afternoon. Results are published each Friday in the newspaper and its online site.
The top vote-getter on offense and the top vote-getter on defense are named Players of the Week and receive a special T-shirt and certificate for their efforts.
Sparrow netted 51.2 percent of the fan vote for offensive honors after rushing for 116 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. He also had a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown and a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to finish with 261 all-purpose yards.
He beat out Matthew LeBourgeois of Centerville, who had a record night for the Bulldogs, and Peter LeBlanc of Catholic High, who had big numbers of his own in very limited playing time.

LeBourgeois set Centerville High records with 24 carries for 341 yards and three touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 63-14 romp over District 7-A rival Highland Baptist. He also had a pass reception for 20 yards in Centerville’s first district win in its three years as a varsity football program. LeBourgeois had 2.3 percent of the fan vote. LeBlanc had six catches for 92 yards in only 16 minutes of play as Catholic High rolled to a 70-0 win over Delcambre in District 7-2A action and played subs for much of the night. He finished with 46.5 percent of the fan vote. Landry was a landslide winner on the defensive side with 80.3 percent of the vote to top a pair of Centerville standouts.
Landry had 12 tackles and a sack, broke up a pass and preserved New Iberia’s 1-point win with a tackle on an attempted 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter as NISH led 28-27. Centerville’s Morty Frederick had 13.4 percent of the fan vote after making eight tackles, including two tackles for loss, with a pass defensed and a sack in the Bulldogs’ win over Highland.
Teammate Dravin Martin finished with 6.3 percent of the vote after making eight tackles with two sacks and two tackles for loss.
Nearly 1,500 votes were cast in all for the week.
