Fire chief: Lit cigarette butt causes house fire in Coteau

- A fire engulfed a home on Romero Road in Coteau Sunday afternoon after a unextinguished cigarette was flicked on a patio, according to Iberia Parish District 1 Fire Chief Guy Bonin. Firefighters from Coteau, Rynella and Delcambre also responded to the alarm.
COTEAU — A house was engulfed in flames around 1 p.m. Sunday after a lit cigarette was thrown on the patio.
Coteau, Rynella and Delcambre volunteer fire departments were on-scene in response to the report, as well as Iberia Parish Fire District No. 1. The structure is located near the intersection of Romero and Captain Cade roads.
Fire District No. 1 Chief Guy Bonin said he was told a cigarette had not been properly put out, which started the fire.
Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office deputies closed a portion of the road to on-coming traffic while firefighters dealt with the fire.
