- Westgate’s Kayshon Boutte carries the ball in their playoff game against Woodlawn Friday at Shreveport’s Independence Stadium.
SHREVEPORT — It’s been a few years since the Westgate High School football team reached the playoffs, and it showed Friday in the Tigers’ Class 4A bi-district game against Woodlawn of Shreveport at Independence Stadium.
Woodlawn jumped out to a 32-0 lead in the first quarter on the way to a 61-20 win that knocked the Tigers out of the playoffs in their first postseason appearance since 2013. WHS coach Ryan Antoine said he hopes the experience is a learning one for the Tigers as they look to get back to the playoffs next season.
“We went in there and got stage fright,” Antoine said of his team playing on the big stage in a college bowl stadium. “We were happy to be there in that type of environment, and before we knew it we were down thirty to nothing. We didn’t respond until the second quarter.”
Trivenskey Mosley got the scoring started about five minutes into the game with a 43-yard touchdown run and the 2-point conversion made it 8-0. After Westgate turned the ball over on downs, the Knights added another TD, then a pick-6 and another Mosley rushing touchdown for the 32-0 lead. Three of the four scores were accompanied by a 2-point conversion.
“We forgot how to tackle,” Antoine said. “We’d have four or five guys hitting the running back as soon as he got the handoff, but we weren’t wrapping up and the next thing you know they’re in the end zone.”
The Tigers got two touchdowns in the second quarter from Mar’Keyvrick Eddie, including a beautiful catch from Tyran Davis in the back of the end zone, Antoine said. But the Knights had a couple of additional TD runs in the period to help Woodlawn maintain its big lead at the half, 46-14.
“Our running game got going a little bit,” Antoine said. “Tyreese (Jackson) ran pretty well.”
Two more touchdowns in the third quarter helped overcome a final Westgate touchdown for the 61-20 final.
“Woodlawn is a good team, but I don’t think they’re 60 points better than us,” Antoine said. “It looked like we hadn’t been in the playoffs for a few years and were just glad to be there.”
Antoine said he needs to do a better job getting the team prepared for those situations. The Tigers were without several players, including starting quarterback Darien Charles. Senior defensive standout Shannon Deal also missed much of the season after injuring his neck and WHS was without do-everything defender and punter Jansen Mayea, Antoine said, after Mayea was in a car wreck Tuesday.
Still, Antoine was proud of his senior class for helping end a playoff drought.
“This senior class is an awesome class,” the coach said. “We have 19 seniors graduating this year.”
The 21st-seeded Tigers finished the season 5-6. Woodlawn (8-3), seeded No. 12 in Class 4A, advances to play at No. 28 Belle Chasse in the second round after Belle Chasse stunned No. 5 seed Plaquemine 21-19 on Friday.
