- Speed bumps sought on Loreauville road
LOREAUVILLE — Rene and Rachel Burke had speed bumps and safety on their mind at Monday night’s Loreauville Board of Aldermen meeting.
The Loreauville residents live near a mobile home park whose residents, they said, are constantly pulling out of the mobile home park and tearing down the road at remarkably high speeds.
“We’d like to see some speed bumps or some lumps or something — a pothole even,” Rene Burke said, only half-joking.
He said it happens at all times throughout the day.
“Our yard is fenced in, where we park our cars. But still, Lilly ran out there across the road yesterday,” his wife, Rachel, said to the mayor and the aldermen, speaking apparently of a young daughter.
“They’ve got a guy in a white Mustang that just floors it,” she said.
The Burkes estimated that people are driving anywhere between 40 and 60 mph.
Loreauville Mayor Brad Clifton said it is a common complaint he has heard from residents on many side streets. He noted that speed bumps have been implemented elsewhere.
He assured the couple that he would look into installing more, beginning by bidding out prices.
“I’ll send in the dimensions. We’ll look into it and get some prices,” Clifton said.
He recalled a previous attempt where the village hadn’t measured the width of the road before placing an order, only to have the speed bumps come up short.
Also on Monday’s agenda was a sidewalk repair project on Main Street just south of Pine Street.
The council agreed unanimously to pay a $1,141 bill to Sellers & Associate Inc., an engineering and surveying company the village had contracted to solicit bids for the repair.
In a letter to Clifton, T.J. Savoy, project engineer for Sellers & Associates Inc., wrote: “Should you wish to proceed with this project, we would like to recommend that this project be awarded to LisCo LLC. in the amount of $6,701.00.”
Alderman Sandy Sonnier introduced a motion to proceed with the project, which was seconded by Alderman Eric Borne and then passed unanimously. Clifton said the quote from LisCo, an Abbeville-based company, was the lowest, but that there are several others to also consider.
Clifton also said he will be delivering a proclamation Friday afternoon at a picnic at Loreauville High School honoring the school’s “A” grade status in recent school scoring results. He also announced that Christmas trees will be going up around town on Wednesday.
Clifton ended the meeting by announcing the final set of games for the Loreauville Pee Wee Football League will begin Saturday morning against the New Iberia Hurricane.
The next board meeting of the Village of Loreauville is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Dec. 11.
