Iberian Editorial: Delcambre Elementary should be applauded

Delcambre Elementary School deserves to be recognized.

The school doesn’t deserve to be praised for the blood, sweat and tears it’s staff puts into educating the young boys and girls of Delcambre. Even though they probably deserve praise for such dedication and sacrifice, but in this moment they deserve our’s and everyone’s applause for the continued act of kindness, and love, that they have shown one of their own, Violet Duplantis.

This past week, The Daily Iberian reported on that kindness that the Delcambre Elementary School has shown to Duplantis, who previously worked in the school’s cafeteria.

Duplantis is currently battling lung cancer and was forced to leave her job due to a weakened immune system due to the treatments she has been undertaking — in an effort to save her life.

Her former co-workers though didn’t forget about Duplantis. In fact, it was just the opposite as they showed just how much Duplantis was part of their extended school family.

Back in September, a group of employees from the school arrived on her doorstep and brought her and her husband Russell a hot meal. And then the school came again the following Wednesday, and every Sunday and Wednesday since then.

Like clockwork, a different group of employees arrive for a visit to their former co-worker and give Duplantis a sense of normalcy, a little slice of peace and a plate full of compassion and love.

The school’s librarian, principal and scores of teachers have all taken part in the hot meals for Duplantis. And apparently the school has no plans to stop delivering her hot meals anytime soon.

To be able to witness a community give a helping hand over and over again to one of their own in a time of need is something that should always be applauded.

Delcambre Elementary School is well deserving of such applause.
