Ernest Ledet

A Home-going Celebration will be held for Ernest Matthew Ledet Sr. at 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at Mt. Calvary Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Lewis, Pastor, officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Wednesday at the church from 8 a.m. until time of service.

Entombment will be at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church Cemetery in New Iberia.

Ernest was born to the late Irvin Ledet and Dorothy Provost Ledet on August 10, 1948, in Cade. At an early age, his family moved to New Iberia. He entered into eternal rest on December 29, 2017.

Ernest, affectionately called “Bo-Boy” by family and close friends, was educated in the schools of Iberia Parish. He was a graduate of Jonas Henderson High School. In 1968, he joined the United States Marines where he served honorably, including a tour in Vietnam.

On December 28, 1974, Ernest was united in holy matrimony to Sandra Gaines. Two daughters and one son were born to this union. He became a devoted father and vowed to care and protect his family.

Ernest loved spending time with family and friends. His sense of humor kept others laughing. He loved watching old westerns on television. His grandson Zavier was the joy of his life. He enjoyed playing with him and attending all of his sporting events and other activities.

He leaves to cherish precious memories, his wife of 43 years, Sandra Gaines Ledet of New Iberia; two daughters, Shmeka Lasha Ledet of Baton Rouge, and Shmauna RaSha Ledet of New Iberia; one grandson, Zavier Zahviere LeErnie Ledet of New Iberia, one brother, Eugene Ledet (Cora) of Houston, Texas; three sisters, Viola Washington of Atlanta, Georgia; Marion Broussard of New Iberia, and Beverly Francis (Leonard) of Beaumont, Texas; brother-in- law, Walter Gaines Jr.; sisters-in- law, Arrisia Gaines Sorey, Lavern Gaines Cleveland and Janis Gaines Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his son, Ernest “Ernie” Ledet, Jr; his parents, Irvin and Dorothy Provost Ledet and one sister, Revelon J. Ledet.

Active pallbearers will be: Danny Bonhomme, Darryl Cleveland, Joffrey Cleveland, Samuel Deal Sr., Carl Gilliam and Kevin Mitchell.

Honorary pallbearers will be: Granville Bonhomme, Leonard Francis, Walter Gaines Jr., Freeman Jackson, Hargis Lewis, Kenward Mitchell, Weston Mitchell and Floyd Smith Sr.
