New Ragin' Cajuns wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator Tim Leger.

LAFAYETTE — Louisiana-Lafayette football coach Billy Napier continues to fill his coaching staff with Louisiana coaches.

Napier announced on Wednesday the hiring of Tim Leger as wide receivers coach/recruiting coordinator. The Lafayette native and father to UL-Lafayette baseball star Gunner Leger comes to the Ragin’ Cajuns after spending the past two seasons as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at rival Louisiana-Monroe.

“Tim Leger is a terrific coach and recruiter,” Napier said in a statement. “He will bring great experience and wisdom relative to our recruiting footprint and strategy. In my short time around Tim, his ability to teach and attention to detail were elite. He will be a great addition to our staff. It’s awesome to reunite he and his wife Ashley with their son Gunner.”

Leger followed Matt Viator from McNeese State to ULM two years ago. 

Leger spent nine seasons as the offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at McNeese State from 2007-15. During his tenure with the Cowboys, Leger coached Erath High School product Derrick Fourroux to Southland Conference Player of the Year honors, and record-breaking quarterback Cody Stroud to Southland Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Prior to that, Leger served as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at St. Thomas More High School under Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame coach Jim Hightower from 2001-06, helping the Cougars win six district championship and reached the state semifinals four times.

Leger was a star baseball and football player at Acadiana High and was drafted in the fourth round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1992, spending three seasons in the Pirates organization. After his baseball career ended, he went on to become a four-year letterman in football at McNeese, where he earned All-SLC honors. McNeese won a pair of conference titles and Leger helped lead the team to the FCS National Championship game in 1997.

Napier’s staff so far consists of either Louisiana natives or those who have coached or played at Louisiana-based colleges.

Offensive Coordinator Rob Sale is a Monroe native that has worked at ULM, McNeese and was a starting guard at LSU. Defensive Coordinator Karl Scott worked at both Louisiana Tech and Southeastern Louisiana. 

Running backs coach Jabbar Juluke is a New Orleans native who was the former head coach at Edna Karr High School and has coached at Louisiana Tech and LSU. Assistant football coach Michael Desormeaux was a former Catholic High and Ragin’ Cajuns star who was head coach at Ascension Episcopal, while safeties coach Patrick Toney graduated from and coached at SLU. Director of football operations Troy Wingerter is a former Cajuns letterman and has served in the school’s athletic department for nearly two decades, and strength and conditioning coach Mark Hocke is a New Orleans native who has degrees from both University of New Orleans and Tulane.
