The New Iberia City Council rang in a new year Wednesday night at its regular meeting with a brief agenda and an announcement by the West End Council of Neighborhood Associations about another entertaining basketball event set for February.

Warren White, WECNA’s fundraising chairman, addressed City Council members at the meeting and told them about the Flight Squad Professional Basketball Show and Game to be held at New Iberia Senior High on Feb. 3.

This will be the third year WECNA has scheduled a basketball game for the community, but the first time the Flight Squad will be the participating team. The first two years, the The WECNA All-Stars played against the Harlem Ambassadors.

WECNA is a community organization that provides repairs to elderly people’s homes, handicap ramps at no charge, school supplies for children and is active in many other community events.

White announced that community leaders playing against the team this year include State Rep. Blake Miguez, R-Erath, marketing director for Iberia Medical Center Seth Landry, Gilbert “Doc” Thomas with Allstate Insurance, David Ditch, Larry Hensgens, City Councilman Marlon Lewis and Iberia Parish President Larry Richard.

“We’re inviting anyone who wants to help sponsor this event to do so,” White said. “All the money we raise goes back into the community.

General admission tickets will be $10 and VIP tickets are $25. White said more information is available by calling him at 201-4515.

In other business, the City Council voted on a budget ordinance amending the budget for the half-cent sales tax revenue that was voted on by New Iberia residents in October. The revenue will go toward the New Iberia Police Department and New Iberia Fire Department.

The motion passed unanimously.
