ST. MARTINVILLE — A St. Martinville man died after being hit by a vehicle while he was trying to retrieve his mail, according to the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Office. 

 SMSO spokeswoman Ginny Higgins said the fatal accident occurred 5:30 p.m. Friday, when James Guigneaux, 75, went to get the mail in the 1000 block of Lady of the Lake Road.  

Following an investigation, SMSO deputies determined Guigneaux walked into the path of the vehicle, which was traveling south, and was hit even though the driver made attempts to avoid hitting the victim. 

 Guigneaux was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead soon after arrival. 

Alcohol and speed was determined to not be a factor, and no charges were filed against the driver.
