The New Iberia City Council will vote on a resolution initiating a contract between the city and Iberia Parish Government for animal control services at Tuesday’s regular meeting.

The agreement calls for the city to $51,000 annually for Iberia Parish to maintain animal control within city limits, much the same way as it does for other parts of the parish. City and parish administrators have been in talks about the agreement for months, and New Iberia Mayor Freddie DeCourt said at a Jan. 16 meeting that it almost didn’t come into fruition.

The City Council approved a preliminary contract at that meeting, which was then sent to be reviewed by Iberia Parish Government. The agreement before the council Tuesday combines the $21,000 the city already paid for a facility plus the $30,000 for dog-catching services, DeCourt said Sunday.

In other business, the City Council will approve two bids for renovations to the West End Community Center and Senior Citizens Center. Five J’s Construction was the lowest bidder for both projects, coming at bids of $57,588 and $40,056 respectively.

Melissa Newell with the Acadiana Metropolitan Planning Organization will provide an update to the council about potential grant opportunities, and the Rev. Zachary Mitchell will talk about prayer events scheduled in District 2 and District 3.

Iberia Parish Council Chairman Paul Landry will address the council as well talk about researching the possibility of merging the drainage flow of Channel M-26 at Tete Bayou for better drainage.

The council will vote on an ordinance purchasing a used 2009 Harley-Davidson FLHPA Road King police motorcycle from the city of Lake Charles for the New Iberia Police Department. The price is $9,190.

Councilwoman Sherry Guidry is set to discuss an erosion issue on the drainage canal that parallels Ann Street near its intersection with Admiral Doyle Drive. Guidry also will discuss requesting the state Department of Transportation and Development to clean the span bridge located near Ann Street and Admiral Doyle Drive.

Also on the agenda, Councilman Marlon Lewis is scheduled to bring up overlay work of Hopkins Street by DOTD, as well as clarify the city’s street swap of Hopkins Street with DOTD.

The meeting is set for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on the third floor of New Iberia City Hall on Main Street.
