After taking two games in a double-header against West St. Mary Monday, the Catholic High Lady Panthers put their undefeated district record on the line Tuesday when they played host to rival Delcambre High, which was coming off three straight wins in its own tournament over the weekend.

DHS also was undefeated in district play with a pair of shutout wins over Ascension Episcopal and West St. Mary two weeks ago.

Catholic High got started early Tuesday with two runs in the first and five more in the second to jump out to a 7-0 lead. CHS held off a late Delcambre rally to stay unbeaten in district with a 9-5 win headed into Thursday’s game at home against Ascension Episcopal.

“I feel like we’re hitting the ball well right now,” said CHS coach Jenny Moneaux, whose team pounded out 14 hits in improving to 4-0 in district. “Alyssa Bertrand was 4-for-4 today and has stepped it up the past few games. The bottom of the lineup stepped up today and that’s what I’ve been stressing. The whole lineup from top-to-bottom has been doing well lately.”

And hit the home-standing Lady Panthers did against Delcambre.

Bertrand finished with three singles and an RBI triple; Meghan Robicheaux finished with three hits, including an RBI triple and a two-RBI single; Peyton Smith finished with two hits; Elise Brown also had two hits; Kylie Guillotte finished with two hits, including an RBI-double; Emily Rosamond doubled and Laurie Badeaux had two hits.

“But also Taylor Fowler pitched a pretty good game and Meghan came in an closed it out for us,” said Moneaux, whose team has improved from 3-4 at the start of March to 6-4 in the last 12 days.

Fowler went 4 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits to get the win while Robicheaux pitched 2 2/3 innings of shutout ball for the save.

Despite the big early cushion and coming off Monday’s double-header, Moneaux felt her team came out a little flat against Delcambre and it wasn’t until the third inning that her squad started getting into the game.

“I had to stress to them that we had to stay in the game and couldn’t get too lax because Delcambre is the type of team that will hit the ball,” the CHS coach said. “They’re going to put runs up on the board and we have to be able to handle our business”

And Delcambre hit the ball and scored runs against Catholic High.

The visiting Lady Panthers rapped out nine hits against CHS and scored three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to cut the lead to 7-5 before Catholic High was able to pull away late for the win.

Delcambre coach Keith Morgan said after the game that giving up seven runs early was the difference.

“I think the biggest problem was our youth and the errors we gave up early in the game,” said the DHS coach, whose team fell to 7-7 overall and 2-1 in district. “Seven runs is a lot of runs. I thought we did well battling back to 7-5 but we gave up those couple of runs late.

“We just couldn’t get our gloves to work for us.”

Madison Latiolais, Alexis Rogers and Baleigh Trahan each had a double and a single for DHS while Shelby Hebert had two singles and Cheyenne Dunn added a hit.

Delcambre travels to Westgate today before jumping back into district next week against Ascension Episcopal.
