Thomas, Mitchell make runoff in St. Martinville mayor’s race

ST. MARTINVILLE   St. Martinville Mayor Thomas Nelson will be facing a runoff with Melinda “Mel” Mitchell following the results of Saturday’s election.

Nelson finished election night with 46 percent of the vote, or 928 votes. Mitchell came in second with 34 percent of the vote. 

Espinola Quinn followed with 14 percent, 278 votes. William “Tiger” Leon came in last with 6 percent of the vote. Unofficial turnout for the election was 46 percent. Nelson and Mitchell will now head to the April 28 election ballot. 

In District 1, incumbent City Councilman Mike Fuselier defeated his opponent Dean Resweber with 81 percent of the vote, or 318 votes. Resweber received 19 percent. 

District 2 incumbent Councilman Craig Prosper also easily defeated Lance Laviolette. Prosper had 64 percent of the vote, or 207 votes, while Laviolette came in with 36 percent of the vote, or 116 votes. 

In District 3, incumbent Councilman Dennis Paul Williams won another term after finishing with 54 percent of the vote, or 241 votes. His opponent Mourice Smith had 46 percent, or 206 votes. 

District 4 candidates will be facing a runoff after Saturday’s election as well. Janise Anthony, Juma Johnson and Nary Smith ran for the district seat after Councilwoman Debra Landry decided not to run again. Johnson and Anthony were the two winners, with 46 percent and 29 percent of the vote. 

A $14.5 million hospital bond proposal for St. Martin Parish also passed during Saturday’s election, with 65 percent, or 794 residents in the parish voting yes and 35 percent, or 429 voting no. The bond will go toward expanding St. Martin Hospital.
