A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia for Adam J. Welcome Sr., 81, who passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at Heart Hospital of Lafayette.

The family requests that visiting hours be observed from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Wednesday at Pellerin Funeral Home in New Iberia.

Interment will follow at Beau Pre Cemetery in Jeanerette.

Adam was educated at the public schools in Iberia Parish, IPTS and Jonas Henderson High School. He is a graduate of Southern University, Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Industrial Education. He pursued further studies at University of Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette).

Adam served two years in the United States Army as a Private First Class. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Ann Day on August 16, 1961; and is the father of two sons: Adam Jr. (Melissa) and Shawn Paul. He is the grandfather of Matthew Paul. He also has an extended family, Twana (Van) Clement and two grandsons Cavan and Caleb Clement. He leaves to remember an impressive Christian life; one brother Preston Welcome, Sr. and one sisterAudrey (Verge) Ausberry.

Adam was a classroom teacher at New Iberia Senior High, New Iberia Freshman High (Westgate), and the Iberia Parish Career Center.  He was also employed at Exxon and retired in 1986 as a corrosion technician. 

At the time of his death, Adam “A.J.” was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church #1, Loreauville. He was a Deacon, Chairman of the Building Committee, and also served in numerous ministries and in various capacities. He was an avid collector of antique memorabilia. His hobbies included reading the Bible and interpreting other religious books.

Pallbearers will be Shawn Paul Welcome, Verge Samuel Ausberry Jr., Larry Vital, Lionel Collins, James Russell Jr., and Don Vital.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Preston Welcome Jr., Verge Ausberry Sr., Daniel Bunch Sr., Junius Joseph, Leonard Fontenette, Jamie Schattle, Deacons of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Acadiana A’s, Southern Alumni Federation, and The Spirit Cookers, Texas.

The Welcome family expresses profound gratitude and sincere appreciation for grace and courtesies.  Please continue to remember us in prayer.
