With two weeks to go in the high school baseball regular season, Teche Area teams are starting to look toward the playoffs and the opportunity to go to the LHSAA State Baseball Tournament at McMurray Park in Sulphur May 9-12.

Several local teams are in line to be home for the first round and possibly the second round of the playoffs when brackets are announced Sunday, April 22. The first round of the playoffs must be played by Tuesday, April 24, for Classes 2A-5A and all divisions and Wednesday, April 25, for Classes A, B and C.

New Iberia Senior High has been on a roll this season in Class 5A. The Yellow Jackets put together an 11-game winning streak early in the season and have battled to a .500 record in district.

NISH (17-6) was eighth in the latest, unofficial LHSAA baseball power rankings that were released Tuesday, one of five District 3-5A team in the top eight seeds.

With eight games left in the regular season, including today at Acadiana and Saturday at home against Comeaux, the Jackets are battling to stay in the top eight to get two home games. Even a little falter towards the end of the season shouldn’t hurt as NISH should stay in the top 16 of the power rankings and get at least one home playoff game.

Westgate (8-14) and St. Martinville (7-13) were 30th and 35th in the Class 4A power rankings, respectively.

As of Tuesday, Westgate would be in the playoffs and SMSH would be on the outside looking in.

WHS has 10 games left in the regular season, including today at home against Teurlings and Saturday at home against Hanson while SMSH has nine games left including a game at Opelousas High today and a home game against Vermilion Catholic Saturday.

Both teams are on the playoff bubble and both teams need to pick up some wins to guarantee a spot in the postseason.

In Class 3A, Erath (14-7) was 14th in the power rankings and in line to play host to a first-round game.

The Bobcats have 10 games left, including today at Patterson and home games Friday against Central Catholic and Saturday against David Thibodaux.

Erath is safely in the playoffs with two weeks left and is fighting for a home game in the first round.

Loreauville (13-6) is fifth in the latest Class 2A power rankings with nine games left including today at Catholic High and Saturday at home against Ascension Episcopal.

LHS is safely in the playoffs with two weeks left in the season but the Tigers are looking to stay in the top eight with the potential to get two home playoff games.

Delcambre (10-9) is 18th in the Class 2A power rankings with seven games left to play, including Friday at Comeaux and Saturday at Catholic High.

The Panthers are fighting to get into the top 16 and play host to a first round playoff game.

Franklin (7-13) is 31st in the Class 2A power rankings and on the playoff bubble since 32 teams get into the postseason.

The Hornets have seven games left in the regular season including a home game today against Ascension Epicopal and a Saturday game at Jeanerette. FSH is one of the teams that need to pick up some wins over the final two weeks to make sure it gets into the playoffs.

Jeanerette (1-10) and West St. Mary (1-8) are 38th and 39th in the Class 2A power rankings. The Tigers have five games left, including today at home against WSM and Saturday at home against Franklin.

WSM has six games left including Jeanerette today and Monday at home against Highland Baptist.

It is unlikely that either team will win enough games to get into the top 32 over the next two weeks.

In Class A, Centerville (8-4) is eighth in the power rankings with five games left including Thursday at Lafayette Christian.

The Bulldogs are looking to stay in the top eight and possibly get two home playoff games.

In Division III, Catholic High (14-8) is fifth in the power rankings with nine games left including today at home against Loreauville and Saturday at home against Delcambre.

The Panthers are looking to crack into the top four in order to have two home playoff games before the state tournament since only 16 teams will make the playoffs in Division III.

In Division IV, Hanson (4-14) and Highland Baptist (9-11) are 22nd and 24th in the power rankings respectively. Hanson has eight games left including today’s game at home against Highland and Saturday at Westgate. The Tigers have some work to do if they want to move up into the top 16 and make the Division IV playoffs.

Highland has seven games left including Hanson today and at WSM Monday. The Bears also have some work to do it they want to have a chance to crack into the top 16.

Finally in Division V, ESA (2-9) is seventh in the power rankings with eight games left including today at home against Abbeville and Saturday at home against Lafayette Christian.

The Falcons are guaranteed to be in the D V playoffs the only question is what seed they will be when the season ends.
