“We were coming home and we saw a bunch of smoke and we first thought maybe it was just cloudy,” said Brittany Landry, who lives across the street. “I joked and said let’s get home and make sure the house is not on fire, and sure enough the neighbor’s house was.”
The home for sale was located on Lewis Street in Jeanerette, less than a block away from city hall.
A total of 25 firefighters responded to the call at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday evening. Iberia Parish Fire District, B.O.M (Bel Air, Olivier and Morbihan), Grand Marais and Jeanerette Fire departments all battled the blaze and got it under control in about an hour.
“The fire started in the rear of the home under the carport, the fire shot straight up into the attic and burned the entire roof,” said Deputy Chief for Iberia Parish Fire District Mike Vincent. “Right now the cause of the fire is being investigated by the State Fire Marshal’s office.
No one was injured in the fire.
