- Good Citizenship was rewarded at Thursday’s DAR meeting in New Iberia. Presenting the award was Norma Lester, front row from left, schlorship winner Abby Langford, her sister and a former DAR Essay winner Emma Langford, Brenda DeKeyzer Lowry, DAR New Iberia Chapter Regent, and the girls’ father, Warren Langford.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution New Iberia Chapter presented its Good Citizen Scholarship to Abby Langford Thursday night during a meeting at the First United Methodist Church parlor. Presenting the award was Norma Lester,
“Out of 13 schools in a three parish area, St. Martin, St. Mary and Iberia Parishes, she is the top one,” Lester said.
Each school made recommendations and if the student choose to go for a scholarship, they had to write a topical essay on the spot within a specified time period. The essays were then judged and winner selected. This year’s topic was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It — How has America advanced the cause of freedom in the rest of the world?” Langford read her essay at Thursday’s meeting. Before May 1 she must choose between accepting a full scholarship to Yale or Harvard, or a school of her choosing.
