Catholic High finds State Tennis Tournament a tough field to beat

MONROE — The Catholic High School boys’ and girls’ tennis teams battled the “Best in the State,” but the Lady Panthers could only manage to capture 2 points while the Panthers claimed 1 point in the team competition at the 2018 All-State/Louisiana High School Athletic Association Division III State Tennis Tournament at the University of Louisiana at Monroe’s Heard Stadium on Thursday.
Loyola Prep claimed the Division III girls’ (11 points) and boys’ (10.5 points) state tennis titles while Isidore Newman (9.5 points) picked up the girls’ state runner-up trophy and Lusher Charter (9.5 points) earned the boys’ state runner-up title.
Catholic High’s Lauren Mixon and Grace Snellgrove led the Lady Panthers in the girls’ singles tournament.
Mixon defeated Jena’s Lynnea Fowler in the opening round before falling 2-1 to Archbishop Hannan’s Mary Gianoli in the second round while Snellgove claimed a 2-0 victory over Caldwell Parish’s Taylar Rankin in the first round only to drop her second round match to Isidore Newman’s Micah Pierce 2-0.
Gavriella Smith of Lusher Charter won the singles title.
In the opening round of the Division III girls’ doubles tournament, CHS juniors Katherine Russell and Emily Trahan fell 2-0 to Parkview Baptist junior Grace Mele and senior Madison Summers.
Anna Katherine Harvey and Mary Cecile Hancock of Loyola Prep claimed the state doubles title.
In the Division III boys’ singles state tournament, Catholic High’s Matthew Moore defeated Loyola Prep’s Carson Massad 2-1 in the opening round before falling to Episcopal-Baton Rouge’s Edward Staib 2-0 in the second round.
The Panthers’ Jonah Dugas dropped a 2-0 decision to University Lab’s Nelson Stafford, who went on to finish as the state runner-up, in the opening round of the boys’ singles tournament.
Zachary Smith of Lusher Charter won the singles crown.
In boys’ doubles, the Catholic High duo of juniors Jordan Ducote and Paul Macip lost 2-0 to Episcopal-Baton Rouge sophomores Casey Rigby and Will McCarthy in the opening round.
Stafford Yerger and Griffen Valiulis of Loyola Prep took the doubles title.
