Iberia Parish Government was out in full force Saturday morning for its annual Household Waste Day at the Iberia Parish Courthouse parking lot to assist local residents in disposing of various items in a safe way.

Iberia Parish Public Works Department employees, as well as Iberia Parish Jail inmates, Iberia Parish President Larry Richard and Iberia Parish Council members sifted through a list of items to be disposed of as drivers pulled up with their waste.

“It’s going very well,” Richard said. “We got a lot of people today.”

The event was held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Estimates showed 150 vehicles, 743 cans of paint, more than 380 batteries and 58 tires were accounted for by the end of the day. There were also 40 DVDs, laptops, screens, cables for various electronics, circuit boards, stereos, cameras, cell phones, a security camera, copiers, fax machines and various other computer related equipment that were brought in.

Drivers waited through a drive-thru of sorts as government employees handled the waste and took it to its appropriate spot.

The annual event is meant to give parish residents a place to discard items that are not meant to be thrown in with their usual garbage. That included hardware, paint, tires, cell phones, laptops, batteries, stereos, electrical equipment, containers and circuit boards.

There was also a list of items that wouldn’t be accepted, such as gasolines, ammunition, furniture, pool chemicals, leaking containers, motor oil, medication and copiers.

“We’ve been getting a lot of vehicles. It’s going pretty good,” Public Works Director Herman Broussard said.
