JEANERETTE — The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a house fire that resulted in a 1-year-old girl receiving second-degree burns to her head, arms and legs.
According to the State Fire Marshal’s Office, the Jeanerette Fire Department notified the office about the fire on Church Street shortly before 1 a.m. Thursday.
A 14-year-old living in the home informed authorities that he was sleeping in a room with his 1-year-old sister. When he awoke to use the bathroom, he smelled smoke and saw a fire on the mattress.
Detectives determined the origin of the fire to be the bed, where a cell phone was laying while plugged into an electrical outlet.
The 1-year-old girl was taken to a Galveston, Texas, hospital for treatment.
At this time, the cause of the fire is undetermined with the inability to rule out electrical malfunction while a cell phone was charging.
The investigation is ongoing.
