A man carrying a rifle during a candlelight vigil Monday night was arrested along with another man after police found drugs and more weapons in his vehicle.

Iberia Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman Maj. Wendell Raborn said deputies were dispatched to the area of Mississippi and Cletus streets at 9:40 p.m. after it was reported a man, later identified as Derrick Adams, was in the area carrying a rifle.

There was a large crowd there for a candlelight vigil for the victims of recent shootings. When deputies approached, a group of people near a vehicle parked nearby started walking away.

Raborn said deputies could see clearly inside the vehicle two AR-15 rifles, an AK-47 rifle with the stock removed and a .22-caliber revolver.

Closer investigation revealed illegal narcotics, as well as more than 200 rounds of ammunition. The owner of the vehicle, Derrick Adams, was identified as the man walking in the area with a rifle during the vigil.

Adams was arrested for multiple charges, including possession of a firearm in a firearm free zone and possession of schedule III narcotics.

A passenger in the vehicle, Tremaine Lewis, was arrested for possession of a firearm in a firearm free zone.

Both were incarcerated at the Iberia Parish Jail.

Adams has a bond of $43,000 and Lewis $20,000.
